Gotcha!!

I've been after getting a half decent shot of a particular Barn Owl recently. Unfortunately poor weather, dog walkers and other traffic has hindered my attempts. Not to be defeated I was up at 5am this morning for another crack.

The light was good, but a lot of cloud was building and I knew I'd only have a small window of opportunity to get the shot I wanted. All I needed was the Owl to play ball and show up on time!!

I could see him hunting some distance away, and eventually he flew towards me...just as the cloud started to cover the sun and reduce the light I could work with. I was willing him to get a move on, but no such luck!!

There was a small, very small, break in the cloud and the bird dropped to the ground a short distance away. I'd lost my chance!!

Behind me the sun broke through and I knew this was my only chance, a quick clap of my hands and he was up in the air surveying his territory. My cunning plan had worked, and he flew across my position bathed in the early morning sun.

Great picture.

Don't know if you have tried but you can actually call barn owls in close with a squeak , I have done it a few times and even had one hovering right over my head on one occasion when in a pigeon hide.

I do this while on night shifts. We have woodland behind where I work, and there are stables there. This has attracted many owls, who feed on the rats/mice. I stand in our car park and make a few squeaks. Nine out of ten times I manage to call in a Barn Owl.

Simply, beautiful !!!!

What camera what lens my friend? ?????

Pentax K-50 and Sigma 150-500 lens.

Shot at 440mm 1/350sec f/6.7 ISO 280

I used a pretty slow shutter speed as I wanted to show movement in the wings and body yet still try to keep the face as sharp as possible.

+1 I was using a wee handheld fox squeaker and 2 came in. Managed to catch them with my torch beam very close up
