Effective Range?

Just a few assumptions: Energy is good; The choke specified is its actual performance and not necessarily its nominal measurement; We're talking round figures and a satisfactory level of marksmanship.

Who would agree that:-

A. With 1oz of No 7s you can consistently kill pigeon at 40 yards with a TC barrel and

B. With 1 1/8oz of 6 1/2s the maximum effective range for pigeon with a Full Choke barrel is 40 yards?

A simple 'yes' or 'no' to each question is good.

Yes, energy is good;

Choke is both a measurement (relative to bore size) and an indicator of performance;

I would agree that with 1oz of No 7s you can consistently kill pigeon at 40 yards with a Tightly Choked barrel and that 1 1/8oz of 6 1/2s the maximum effective range for pigeon with a Full Choke barrel is in excess of 40 yards?

I've amended my description of 'choke' for clarity with regard to the questions. With regard to the questions asked, do I read it that your answer to both is that you don't agree with either A. or B.?

Absolutely yes . Again based on actual shooting in the field . 40 yards is not a long shot for an experienced gun . We have all picked that long long bird stone dead at 80 good paces ,haven't we ?

No to B for sure, the combo is good for a bit more range.

If TC is meant to be IC as in Improved Cylinder then no way, not consistently but if you mean Tight Choke then yes.

A = Yes. 40 yards is as far as I can kill pigeons with no 7 cleanly.

B = No. With no 6 in full choke if you have the skill to hit the pigeon No 6 will do the job beyond 40 yards. its a question of how you hit it. I have always found that when hit at 50 yards the pigeon usually loses few if any feathers if its hit in the head and front end of the bird. When you knock out a cloud of feathers you are hitting the bird behind and it is not going to be a clean kill. At this range the ability of the shooter is as important as the cartridge\choke combination.

A = I have no idea

B = I have no idea

I just go pigeon shooting and shoot any of the multitude of cartridges that usually are in my bag at any pigeon that I think is in range , repeat and go home :good:

+1

Many thanks to those who answered the questions. Obviously, whatever anyone uses is correct as it suits their individual needs, but that wasn't what I asked.

Cheers

So can you confirm what you meant by TC;

Is it TIGHT CHOKE, TRUE CYLINDER or IMPROVED CYLINDER?

Hi, Dave,

Usual terminology, TC is True Cylinder. That's why I specified choke performance. The TC spec' is a 40% pattern at the 40 yards but as you know a nominally bored TC barrel will often shoot well below that figure.

Phil

The same answer from me too, although I will need more cartridges than most due to my lack of ability to shoot straight. ;)
