I have been approached by 2 separate people from different mobile numbers to sell my shotguns listed on gunwatch without a current shotgun certificate or fac.

I have again been approached to sell a rifle under a similar premise of 'i didnt think you needed a licence'

All use the premise of buying a shotgun for a gift to their grandfather. There is an ongoing police investigation into this matter so I can't say any more but members should be made aware to prevent anyone getting in to trouble or worse - a gun falling into the wrong hands.

Should anyone be approached in this way, please report to Warwickshire police or 111 quoting case number 216/02012015

I hope this can prevent any wrong doing.

I was in a well know gunshop in Bolton when I was approached by a chap, he asked me if i had a shotty licence, I replied yes I had, he then asked if I would buy him a particular shot gun and give it to him outside as he had "forgotten" the bring his ticket with him ! When I told him to do one he wasn't a happy chappy

Well the first two were suprisingly insistant and it was a rouse about 'buying for their grandad for his birthday' (why would you buy a pair of £40 baikals for someones bday). The new one said he thought my .17hmr was a 'gas gun' and assumed you didnt need a licence. I reckon eastern european as 'gas guns' are a mostly european phenomenon and have never been well known here.

My worry is they find someone stupid enough and then it causes crazy outrage when its used as a weapon.

At least we all have the crime reference now so we can build a case with all pigeon watch members who have been approached. My local bobby came to see me but hadnt got much to go on.

What's more worrying is people with fac don't know the law.

The amount of times people don't believe me you need a one for one . Even my mates dad who's had a fac for 20 years says he's never done a 1 for 1.

I know another lad who's never told the Feo when he's bought or sold a shot gun. He writes it on his sgc only but is due a renewal shortly.

When it was Target sports, I even told the guy behind the counter about what had happened but he didn't seem to be bothered about it, I went another time and a guy was shouting at the lad behind the counter because he said he had forgotten to bring his shotty ticket to buy as case of shotgun cartridges, when the lad said he couldn't buy them without showing his ticket the fella shouted even louder that he "knew" him as he had bought loads of cartridges off him before, the lad just said ok,,, and sold them to him,, at that point I walked out and never went back , I,ll stick to bondys in preston ,,

I've had this happen to me in the past too - shotguns for sale, and phone calls asking if they can get a copy of the SGC emailed to me, as they're 'on holiday', and haven't got it with them. As such, these days I always make it clear in 'for sale' ads that the original certificate will be required for ME to fill in.

Fortunately, some people aren't timewasters. I had some 223Rem factory ammo that I wanted to sell, arranged to meet up with the buyer at the PW charity shoot today, although he wasn't attending the shoot (he lives relatively locally). Met him, he stayed for the raffle and bought some tickets, and then got the ammo all signed on to his FAC. Job done !

IIRC its not a legal requirement to show your sgc when purchasing cartridges, good practice by mosts shops but not a legal requirement. Happy to be corrected if this isnt the case.

Firearms guidance, 5.14 is the relevant section :

5.14 Section 5 of the 1988 Act prohibits the sale of ammunition for a shotgun or smoothbore gun, and for which a firearm certificate is not required, to a person who is neither a registered firearms dealer nor a person who sells such ammunition by way of trade or business unless that person:

a) produces a shotgun certificate or a firearm certificate (the original, not a photocopy) authorising them to possess a smooth-bore gun;

b) shows that they are entitled to possess a shotgun or smooth-bore gun without holding a certificate; or

c) produces a certificate (the original, not a photocopy) of some other person together with a written authority from the holder of the certificate to purchase the ammunition on their behalf.

This section only applies to ammunition not subject to control under section 1 of the 1968 Act. There is no requirement for a vendor of shotgun cartridges to be registered as a firearms dealer.

So, you must either produce your SGC (a), produce another person's SGC along with a letter from them authorising you to puchase cartridges on their behalf ( c ) ... or 'show that you are entitled to possess a shotgun without a certificate' (b).

Section 6 deals with classes of people allowed to possess without a certificate (RFDs and employees, Visitor's permit holders, etc)

Well after reading all these stories it's just plain clear to me that the world is full of muppets

Oh yes and some don't even realise it. 2 lads drove 3 hours to get to me yesterday to buy a 22lr (didn't want it RFDed as they want to see it first), I asked if he had an open slot, "yes I know the rules i've done it before."

"Ok see you in a bit" I reply.

They turn up inspect the rifle very happy with it, I go to do the paperwork (2 year old FAC) the permission to acquire is filled by the rifle he bought 2 years ago, but he's written sold underneath it!

I explain the system won't have it show him the paperwork and guidance, not happy and doesn't accept it, rings his firearms team they confirm it and tell him it'll take around 3-4 weeks.

Then asked for petrol money/or gift for wasting his time!

There sure are muppets in this world.

I was shocked once when talking to an RDF,he said he got a call and a guy asked to buy a cheap shot gun with one cartridge and said he had no licence.Obviously the RDF refused,RDF he called 1471 and retrieved the mobile number. He immediately rang the police as was worried the guys intension was too shoot himself.RDF rang police with this infirmation with the expectation that they would trace mobile or at least give the guy a call,no not interested as according to them 'he had not yet committed a crime'
