First fox!

Up doing my DSC1 & paid for a muntjac stalk this evening. The other two that went out both got one each and saw loads more but aside from a few hares & rabbits, I saw none.

Just as the light was about to go, my guide pointed out a fox so I shot it, it dropped like a sack of spuds but when we climbed down out of the high seat to inspect it, it only had three legs! The missing one looked well healed (no pun intended) and the fox wasn't in bad shape considering. Expensive Charlie, though, especially if you're counting per limb!

Anyway, first thing I've killed with the .223 and first ever fox - just wish it had been a bit more challenging but better than nothing

Someone inspected the carcass and reckons the leg stump was surgically stitched up - would a fox with three legs survive in the wild or is it likely to starve to death, in which case whoever released it should be prosecuted for cruelty to animals?

Considering their varied diet and that much of it is made up of insects, fruit and mice, I see no reason why a 3 legged fox could not survive.

I would imagine most of the population would rather treat and release an animal that stood every chance of survival rather than kill it. I know I would.

I have shot two three legged foxes over the years. One dog and one vixen. Both were in extremely good condition and the vixen had had cubs on her recently.

Leg stumps were rough but fully healed over.

Also had a three legged munty in this area for three or four years. It died about two months ago but of natural causes - Not shot.

In fairness, after two hours sat in a freezing high seat, I would have shot a panda had it wandered past... ;) The fox was the only animal we saw, aside from hares and rabbits and the guide told me to shoot it - I presume it's a condition of using the farmer's land that foxes are kept under control. It was almost dark by the time he appeared and through the scope I could hardly make him out at all - wasn't until we got to the body that we saw the missing leg.

Pleased it was a clean kill - at 35 yards with a .223 I'd have been concerned had it not been!
