oil filters

ok thanks , but what does the valve do , its only small , I,m talking about the valve looking thing inside the filter.

 

I was looking on line for a replacement for my trooper some say with bypass others not

My understanding was , say for instance the the weather is below freezing the oil is thick and won't run through the filter very well , the bypass valve allows the oil to go straight through untill the engine warms !

The bypass valve ensures the engine can't get starved of oil even if the filter is clogged. The oil pressure will reduce if the filter gets clogged. If I remember correctly, the bypass valve needs the correct amount of oil pressure to keep it open. Once the oil pressure drops due to a clogged or damaged filter, the valve closes (it could be the other way around) This allows the oil to effectively bypass the filter so that the engine has a constant supply of pressurised oil.
