somebody on here...a couple of years ago posted a simple wiring diagram for just that...im sure somebody will post something shortly.........what size winch are you putting on ?

if it is a simple recovery winch , to get you out of a sticky patch...maybe all you need is a bigger battery...!!

Not sure what winch, I am hoping to find something good but secondhand. It will just be used to get me out of the boggy ground (axle deep) in the woods that I seem to find and says me the embarassment of calling the farmer.

if you are looking to just pull yourself out of boggy ground...get a low tonnage winch ...say 1-3 tonnes..........but if you are pulling timber out and heavy stuff....do as NEIL & FOXY suggest......split charger........and sparky

Yes, just helping me drag myself out of boggy ground. Might just go for a bigger battery then as it will only be used now and then.

Any winch recommendations?

cant suggest any winches......get one you can source spare parts for..........and maybe dont fit a steel cable,,,fit a keflar strop.................get advice on the battery...i fitted a Bosh battery 7 years ago it was expensive then £ 200.00............but it is still good as new.........also get yourself a metre long 20mm dia steel stake and a sledge hammer as a recovery point for the strop when you get stuck when there are no trees to strop on to...couple of shackles would be of use as well....

I have military rear hub winches. No electrics needed. :)

No good on alloys though they are too weak. You need sturdy steel wheels for these. I have the dyneema rope for these as less prone to snapping and decapitating bystanders than steel rope.

Just fit an extra battery next to your original under the seat and fit a split charge relay, very easy to do and will cost you no more than £100 for a half decent battery and relay.

Sounds ideal, this was what I was planing, I understand the battery bit but have no idea about a relay. I think I need a wiring diagram with instructions.

I will see if Google can help.

The instructions come with the relay. I had the same setup in my Defender to run a winch and it never let me down.

No need for a 2nd battery setup for an occasional use recovery winch. I run a single battery setup still on a Jeep off-road toy with an electricity-hungry Warn 8274 winch that gets used multiple times every day I'm playing off-road, sometimes in quick succession when I'm driving very badly and getting stuck.

Wire the winch as per installation instructions with a safety cut off. For what you want to achieve a cheap no-name Chinese winch off eBay will be fine but if you would prefer a name and a warranty then Come-Up and Goodwinch are very good at sensible prices. Steel rope will be ok for you, just keep people away when it's under tension winching in.

Made in the USA, parts easily available from several companies in the UK but they are expensive winches.

i have seen in the past WARN winches going for pennies at the local auction sale.....next time i see one i will have it...maybe all it needs are brushes..or clutches ....
