Barrel Fracture

Took my Hatsan pump out the other day and noticed this split in the barrel. The fracture can be seen on the inside of the barrel too.

Have sent the photo and spoken to Tom Heapy, the armourer at Edgar Brothers, who deal for Hatsan. He says he`s never seen anything like it. There`s no bulge in the barrel just a crack. Has anyone else seen anything like this before? Any ideas what could have caused it?

I`m getting a new barrel but I`m probably going to have the damaged piece cut off this one giving me an unchoked barrel of about 26". A quick question. If at a later date I decide to sell the gun would the cut down barrel have to be reproofed?

Interesting, I can just see the Hatsan Haters gathering voice!

The cut down barrel would not require proof testing.

Well before they do let me just say that Tom has been brilliant about this matter. The gun is quite old and well out of warranty. We chatted about a few different options and eventually settled on a new 30" barrel. The total cost, shipped to a local gunshop, just £40.

Thanks.

I think the cut down barrel would need a proof test if the gun is sold on with it , if its just for personal use then no.

With no bulge and no damage to the choke which probably lets steel off the hook, another option is material flaw. Yep, if it was flawed throughout you would expect the higher pressure end to fail first. However, would you be confident that with further use nothing else would 'let go' and I'm thinking somewhere closer to your head. As you've been well treated by Edgars, I'd be inclined to bin that one rather than take a risk. It'll be interesting to hear what our resident 'smiths say if they pick up on the thread.

As long as it's not cut down to less than 24inches it is still classified as a shotgun, and a cut down barrel does not require a re-proof, even if you sell it!.......but I personally would be very wary regarding the quality of steel that barrel was made from!

i havent seen this but have seen one with a buldge just before the choke, it actually happened when the guy was practicing on clays with us, on inspection it looked like a poor fitting choke, the barrel was replaced under warranty without a problem

No it would not need reproof just because it's cut down only if your remove metal from the inside of the barrel.

Personally I would not shoot that barrel again it's failed EB can see it as well it shouldn't have done so have done the right thing.

I was a non destructive testing technician, with what I can see it is a material fault, you could get it tested, dye penetrant tested, x rayed and ultrasonic inspection to test for further flaws, it would cost a lot of money, £40 for a new barrel, bin this one, too risky even if cut down.

Regards

Gary.

Thanks I was not 100 % sure, I agree I would not want to use the barrel again , if it has another fault nearer the chamber it could be nasty.

I'm surprised Edgar bros don't want it back for inspection

I did offer to send the damaged section over if I decided to cut it down and Tom was very interested in having a look. With the advice here about not risking shooting it again in case of further flaws I might ask him if he wants the entire barrel.

Thanks for all the advice guys.
