Copy it onto a USB stick.

Great advice

Sadly I must have less computer knowlage than the op

And found that no help

What's a USB ?

How big should it be eg 2000 pictures

And how do you use it

I'm sure someone will help in a minuite mate

Best of luck I know how you feel totally inadequate and frustrated

Although the task might seem to be difficult, it is a very simple thing to do. Like a journey there are several ways to get to the same place. All that you are doing is moving data (Items) from one place to another. This can be done by using a USB flash drive or a male / male usb lead. This link shows a usb connection. http://www.ehow.co.uk/about_4587201_what-does-usb-stand.html

You will need one or the other to be able to move the files. This is a good time to go through a load of stuff and have a sort out of blurred photos and stuff that you had forgotten that you had and rationalize the files into an order of some kind. If your computer is much like most peoples then you will have just put stuff into it like putting bags and boxes into a garden shed. When you have a sort out you generally say, “ I’d forgotten that I had that” or “ I wondered where that had gone to”.

It is a good idea to create directories in MY PICTURES ready to put the files into such as car >> Dog >> Family ECT. Otherwise to will be just tipping them into another garden shed to be lost or forgotten again.

When you have got the necessary drive or cable to be able to move the files you highlight the files and copy or move them to the desired directory. The more I type this it sounds more & more complicated but it isn’t and >> Get a kid to show you. Get a flash drive or cable and come back.

Best advice so far

Although down south it'll be a £10 note

Many thanks

As little as that. Usually it is a car or house at least down in this area.

The bloke on that youtube link is a real computer geek.

could I use a Ethernet cable?

Yes but it's more complicated.

Couple of questions.

How much data do you have to transfer?

How old is the 'old' laptop?

If it isn't that old get a USB to SATA cable, take the disk out of the old laptop and connect that to the new one.

One of these will do it.

Recently I bought a 500gb drive external drive from pc world as I was concerned about the age of one of my systems and the fact that it had about 40 thousand pictures on it’s hard drive + tons of documents and other stuff. The transferred files only used a fraction of the drive space. I think that this was only about £50 and is another option for you to consider as it just plugs into a usb port and is just like a BIG capacity external drive like a flash drive only with massive space. It has the good feature that it is easily plugged into any computer anywhere. The physical size of it is about 4 x 3 x ½ inches so it fits in a trouser pocket.

If Moving them to a USB stick is going to prove hard for OP then im sure as hell removing the HDD and using a Sata to USB cable will be more confusing for him!

As someone else said, the kids/grand kids and £5 is probably a good resolution for you

Something like this guide may be useful (although the guys does waffle alot) it seems very basic in its information. Although your PC will probably not have windows & if its 5 years old the principle is the same and so is the location of everything.

Another alternative is get someone you trust to move them for you via a remote connection (they see and control your PC), It's a feature in windows and I use it when I'm sorting the parents PC out.

All you would need to do in plug the USB stick in the old then new pc once the files are copied and send the invite for the remote assistance session.

Final alternative is getting someone on the phone or SKYPE to talk you through it.

Need any help or assistance give me a shout

USB stick is essentially a tiny storage device, you plug it into one of the many sockets on your PC (usually 1 or 2 on the front) and it shows up on your PC as another storage device which you can move files too and from.

The size depends on what you are moving e.g 2000 pictures can be relatively small or huge depending on the quality and how they are saved.

have decided to get one of these and give it a go===WD My Passport Ultra 1 TB Portable Drive, £47 from Amazon.

That's what I did on mine when I updated my computer - backed it up from the old one and restored it on to the newer one, then continued using it as backup on the new one.

Where did you buy the new laptop?

If you bought it from PCWorld go and speak to them at the shop, they will transfer all your data and photos.

Hopefully someone from PW local to you may offer to do it for you.

Recently got a new laptop, and now I need to transfer photos and music from old one. Question Is how? I am a 50+ male with no computer know how so please be gentle and speak English, not that techo jargon! Cheers.

Your best option I would say is get an external hard drive from someone like PC world, and get someone you know or PC world help desk, to copy the files from the old machine to the hard drive and then to the new machine.

Then use this hard drive on a regular basis to take a copy of your documents/pictures/videos. Keeping everything just on your laptop means that if something goes wrong with its main disk you will lose it all.
