mick miller Posted May 30, 2015 Author Report Share Posted May 30, 2015 I've shot about fifteen foxes over the last six or seven months from that spot! I need to sort out the first layer on the printer next to get a smoother finish on the parts, they show a little ghosting from places where the filament doesn't get put down correctly (partly due I think to a slightly warped bed). I went out with this ensemble tonight for an hour and shot seven rabbits at under 40 yards, the 67mm lens, internal cone and dimmer combo works a treat for close up stuff. Pretty sure the IR light isn't overpowering as some might state. I had muntjac walk past me 30 yards away and was totally clueless as I followed it in the crosshairs. It freaked a little bit when it came across four dead rabbits next to each other though! Now getting ready to print and assemble another for myself and then a few for other people - I have one chap in particular who seems very keen to get his hands on one. The new design DSA works perfectly too, very stable and I don't seem to get any of the droop I used to get with the Cobra Merlin ones. mick miller Posted May 30, 2015 Author Report Share Posted May 30, 2015 It's really a truly terrible time of year for video, as it never really gets dark at the mo, but I will try and show it working from 7 yards all the way to 500 yards with no white out from the camera, the analogue dimmer, push/pull focus, internal secondary cone and - if you need it - diffuser really do mean that one torch can now cover all bases from ratting in barns with a sub 12ftlb air rifle to foxing out to 200 or even 300 yards (if you're good enough to shoot at those distances), plus you can spot quarry much, much further out still. mick miller Posted May 31, 2015 Author Report Share Posted May 31, 2015 The add-on weighs 500gms, the torch weighs 200gms, not including the adjustable torch mount. The 67mm torch weighs less than a T20 with a battery in. The add-on is heavier than some but does include a 4ah 12v lithium-ion battery that makes up over half the total weight. It does mean you can use it for several hours (or nights) before recharging and you only need to worry about keeping one battery charged. I have just completed the circuit board layout, when I get back I'll be able to process, develop and solder up at least four units, which will all now be identical, this is something that I feel is vital on any build if other people are going to use them. I've sorted out the protection should anyone oddly decide to plug the charger into the led port (I suppose it could happen) and the final step will be getting the first layers off the 3D printer to be bob on which is something I'm talking to the manufacturers about - I may need a new heated bed under warranty, not sure yet. Provided I have got my circuit layout right it should all be relatively plain sailing from here on in! I have around sixteen cameras left, I may be able to get a few more but last time I tried they had ceased production! No worries, I have two other board cameras to test that they assured me would be the same spec. Now at least a hot swap is a viable and easy proposition. I have cut one of these covers down before but don't forget, when you put your eye up to the cover you compress the last inch until it's flat against the circular cup. I have also used a slip on stock extension in the past but can't be bothered with it these days. Head is further back no doubt, but not far enough back to cause a real issue. mick miller Posted July 23, 2015 Author Report Share Posted July 23, 2015 Thank you, I've just sent a unit to another member for them to use so hopefully some video will be up shortly. I've also spent the last week tweaking the power control circuitry to allow me to fit a micro controller, a small bit of programming on that and the unit automatically turns itself off after 8 minutes. That means you can't accidentally turn it on in a bag and reach your destination only to realise you've got a flat battery (although it does come with a charger that works of a lighter socket too). If you have it on in the field for longer than 8 minutes and it turns off you simply cycle the on off switch and it comes back to life. Handy.
