A booby saves the day!!

Spent the day at Grafham yesterday with my buddy.

We had planned to go to Rutland but because of road closures due to a cycle race it ended up easier to get to Grafham.

It was much brighter than we would have liked but hey-ho. Also, when we get there lots of boats were going out on a competition but, fortunately, they'd had some cancellations so we managed to book one.

I'd had fish previously on a train of buzzers so I started with them. We were at Clywedog last weekend where boobies were the order of the day so my buddy started with that.

No takes for either of us so we eventually changed to nymphs and mid-afternoon my buddy finally broke the duck with a nice three pounder on a black gold head.

I tried various nymphs throughout the day with no success. Being so bright I was fishing all depths including the bottom. As evening came on a terrific Mayfly hatch started but, surprisingly we only saw the odd trout rise to it. I tried Mayfly nymph and dry Mayfly to no avail.

We motored back from the far side and had a stop in the deeper water in the middle. Out of desperation I put an orange booby on with an intermediate line but started the retrieve almost as soon as the fly landed.

Bang!!! terrific take from right to left and a good scrap finally got a nice two and a half pounder into the boat.

Only one fish each but what a beautiful way to spend a day. :good:
