Couple of small bags on peas

Posted response to query as to any big bags on peas yet with this:

"Been watching 6 pea fields since drilled and only set up once when just chitting out of lack options....shot about 5 I think. Crop has been in flower for over a week now and this week have had increasing numbers hitting one field. Had about 250 this lunchtime. Plan to get out tomorrow morning as a good wind and rain in the afternoon. Unfortunately the crop is a healthy height and will be difficult to retrieve birds from it without doing some damage. Have one thin spot in the shade of an large oak so plan to have the hide against the oak with wind left to right AND try to restrict shots to the kill zone where they can be retrieved. May have to leave most second shots but I won't leave wounded birds unretrieved and my dog will do more damage than the pigeons in the healthy crop....typically two of the other fields have a wide margin of poor crop on heavier ground which the dog wouldn't damage and hardly a pigeon in sight on them."

When I arrived at 8AM yesterday the farmer had just finished spraying the crop. Ideal for the pigeons as all the peas in the tramlines were now nicely pushed down so easier for the birds to land on. Unfortunately the peas had grown in height since I'd lasted walked through the crop a week ago and even in the shade of a large oak the peas were a good height. Set up a magnet and about 20 shells just sat on top of the peas. I tried to restrict myself to shots over a narrow kill zone and along a hedge about 35 yards in front of me. I marked and retrieved all birds as I shot them which reduced my time in the hide. The traffic was slow to start then steady until 12 and then dried up. Birds did not decoy well...but plenty did a fly past. Packed up with 30 dropped, 25 picked from 73 shots.

Had a drive round this morning before work and same field was busy again. Finished work early and at field for 4:30 to find about 200 birds feeding. Moved them off and set up again. Birds were keen to return but favoured the other end of this large 90 acre field. I kept putting shots in the air and they would lift up and a few break off to come over my decoys. Again fairly steady traffic until 8 pm. Packed up having lost count of birds dropped but picked 25 from 64 shots.

This field gets plenty of pigeon traffic at harvest and first time in peas for me so looking forward to seeing these peas cut.
