Rental van maintance

Well I hired a Luton van yesterday to move stuff as part of a house move and had 2 issues what PW advice on maintance or lack of.

1 Battery unserviceable and needed replacing last night.

2 lunchtime today luckily with an unloaded van doing 60 the rear wheels on the left hand side fell off due to loose wheel nuts. Luckily I kept it on the road and an HGV saw it happening and sloweled the traffic to allow me to get it under control and stopped. The one wheel bounced past me hit the central barrier luckily not hurt anyone luck today.

So what checks are hire companies meant to do on vechiles before letting them out.

I'm afraid wheel nuts are the drivers responsibility. Harsh as it sounds it should be part of your initial walk around checks. Not that I know anyone that actually checks them!

This ^

in theory you have taken an unroad worthy vehicle on the road,

See what they say and mention you are thinking of going to vosa

About eight years ago I rented a van that was a deathtrap, The front pads were down to the metal, bulbs blown etc took it back but the attitude was couldn't care less

Think you rented from tha same place that we did that's based near Lincoln.

Dam awful experience

Going for a chat tomorrow as their paperwork states a load of bull but one thing it says is basically there is no jack or wheel brace as messing with or change wheels invalids the insurance. (Not the exact words but same meaning) therefore it must be their responsibility owe and he said it was Friday night.

If I get no joy it be straight to the new Vosa

If it's a larger operator I would get straight on to someone higher up the food chain, not worth wasting your breath at local branch level. Are they bvrla members too? Might be worth looking at that as well. Ether way, disgraceful way to do business.

They admitted liability then said it wasn't them, it had brand new tyres on it when I picked it up still had the stickers on!!

Couldn't explain how the handbrake didn't work mind or the fact the load area was full of broken glass after a valet.

So full refund, still not sure if VOSA or HSE need to know but I will hand on my heart NOT recommend this company in Lichfield to anyone.
