Whole crop rye ---- new to me

One of my farms has just cut a field of rye for whole crop , very unusual around here , in fact its the first I have ever come across , so am clueless as to if the pigeon will find the stubble attractive.

I am guessing there will be little for them with the crop cut while still green , but will keep a eye on it .

Anyone have any experience of this crop and did it attract pigeon ?.

I have shot pigeons on a few occasions on Rye , but not when it was green like your talking about ,

We had two fields one year that was grown for bread and with it being a long stem crop it got knocked about a bit, and to answer your question ( do it attract pigeons ) yes it did in decent numbers .

I shot a lot on one field that went as flat as a foot ball pitch in some parts when it was nearly ripe , and that must have been the end of July because I went to the C L A Game Fair the next day on a Sunday.

The other field we had was laid in the middle and the standing Rye was tall enough for me to knell in the tram lines without a hide , that was a while ago as my knelling days are like one or two of my mates funerals I have been to lately .......gone but not forgotten

Yes I think that pigeons will go for the rye if it has been left long enough for the ears to fill with grain.

When I left Gloucestershire last week I saw a field of winter barley being whole cropped. I called a friend and he had a good day on it at the weekend.
