So they ban lead from all hunting firearms.

What are the alternative methods we hunters could turn to that shoot but are lead free?

I know some Americans use non lead bullets akin to Barns.

Some have used brass ball in smooth rifles and long rifles

And of course another of my favourites is archery of which the Dutch and French besides the Americans are doing just fine with!!

Any other ideas?

You are missing the point of the people behind the bans are't you UD. We are supposed to give up hunting and buy xboxes and waste our lives glued to screens and live in a virtual world where everything is Kill Kill KIll in cyberspace with handheld gaming units and outside that everything is pink and fluffy.

We become frappachino drinking, Daily Mail reading vegetables with little in life to look forward to. If we feel the sun on our skin we should remove it quick as the ink will leach into skin rendering us impotent with a faint hint of breasts fashioned onto our freckles.

The TV is our lives and our online presence becomes greater with cyber friends rather than real ones. Days of having a quiet pint in a pub chatting with good friends disappears to online via a few short years of pubs filled with 2 for 1 food, insipid beer and sport channels on a plasma screen the size of Yorkshire belching out pre-arranged football scores at 130 decibels.

Our lives will be lived out for us, all we need do is microwave our frappachinos.

So stop worrying.

Ud steel is the only sensible shot type live with it.

As for rifles they'll come out with a polymer blend core jacketed bullet.

Saying that I wouldn't mind a bow.

Lead me to the bridge now.......................

Having said that, a nice big crossbow would be handy

We may have to do alternative shopping also. According to a snippet I saw on the tv the other night, the levels of air pollution in our cities has reached the point where 29000 people died as a result last year, and in Oxford Street, exhaust fumes are 3.5 times higher than the EU legal limit. Air pollution is linked to heart and lung disease apparently.

Does anyone know how many people died from ingesting lead shot game last year? According to the WWT it is a high risk undertaking.

The thoughts and words that spring to mind are; insult, assault and joke!

On that point UD, a very clever British company made a crossbow with a vertical prod, they won some design awards and sold into the military. Any idea about who they were?

I remember them too but don't recall the name, they were very expensive at the time too!

catapult, after your recent outing and managing to retreive your balls your one step ahead

Bit limited though bud.

:unhappy:

I think they had a nice design so the bolt was centred on the prod

Yes, I remember something like that.

I actually like an American chaps design that basically holds a small compound bow on a trigger and uses full length arrows. Sure his name is Jerry someone...will have a look.

Well I've never seen that before, what a great simple idea. Of course, several years ago it was quite legal to shoot a rabbit with a crossbow, now you'd be banged up if you even shot a rat with one. These tiny little chips at the edge of our sport all add up, death by a thousand cuts.

They have to catch you first!

My whole point through out this stupid lead ban notion is that shooting won't go away or end.

The perfectly natural for some to hunt will prevail and poaching, shall we say against the state will just go on very quietly.

There will be the odd boom now and then, the archer extracting after dark, secret stashes of lead shot, cartridges smuggled in by boat, bullet casting will increase, big bores will come back into fashion and muzzle loading will increase and the purchase of ball moulds. Just as much as the state gives a minority the finger so does a minority give the state the finger.

Remember, there is no law that says you can not take bow of any sort for a walk.

Loads of differing arrow heads available for any purpose and not illegal at all to own!

Whilst I strictly shouldn't be agreeing with this post, if I'm perfectly honest I have to. I know plenty of people who hunted and shot illegally before turning legit; I did myself. And in turn I know quite a few who would revert back to that if necessary.

It is only the thought of losing my tickets which keeps me legit. As a result I do everything by the book; I don't speed (old Landrover owner anyhow :) ) I don't drink and drive, I abide by all the terms and conditions of my tickets, I use steel shot where applicable, I don't get ****faced of a weekend and spoil anyones night and generally am a goody two shoes...within reason. I even stay in during Fair week so I see as little as possible of it. :)

A shooting ban wont necessarily stop people hunting, but it will make it very hard to police.

i'm not bothered by a lead ban, i'm using steel only in my shotguns and cooper bullets in my rifle (Barnes TSX) and funny thing is, are net superior to any lead core bullets i ever come across... so bring it on

I really hope that's tongue in cheek. I've been shooting for 50 odd years, from the days when you could pop into the post office and get your shotgun certificate over the counter for 7/6 (35P) and walk into the Ironmongers next door and buy your shotgun.

When the semi-auto rifles and multi-shot shotguns went there was very little fight shown by the associations or many individual shooter, it only concerned relatively few people on the edges so why bother.

Banning hunting with bows of any description slipped through without even causing a ripple, banning full bore pistols didn't really have the support of mainstream rifle shooters and very little support from associations such as the NRA, the attitude being, why worry, it won't ever effect target rifle shooting at Bisley, and besides, who actually needs a pistol.

Small bore pistol shooting went the same way - Now we see the situation in Scotland where, even if you already have a SGC and an FAC you will still need a licence for your sub 12ft lb airgun and need to prove good reason. Plinking in the garden will not be "good reason".

Do you think banning lead bullets will be the end of it? Not at all, just one more petty regulation to comply with, loosing a few more shooters on the edges, those who shoot gallery lever action rifles will find lead bullets difficult to buy, some EU directive will dictate that lead can only be cast in an approved environment etc. etc.
