Walking to Heel - a breakthrough?

My 16 month old Lab is, if I may say so, coming on well but he will not walk to heel (i.e walk with his nose level with my knees)

I have tried everything, whippy sticks, loose lead etc etc.

This morning he accompanied me (he comes everywhere feasible) as we were going off to measure some planking - I was carrying a metal tape and thought that perhaps the crackling noise of the extended tape in front of his nose might stop him edging away - and it worked! Early days yet but a simple (possible) solution?

Thoughts please?

Thanks

First rule of dog training , there are no rules , if it works for you then all is good .

It will be really handy carrying a tape measure about everywhere you go too :)

Just been out again - this time with a few dummies (the retrieving kind) and it worked again- so far!

He's a little different in a field or open space - !

Good point, however I should carry a tape that way I could measure how far I missed by.

With my shooting you would need a very long tape!!

On a serious note that little trick with tape is quite something, I've trained quite a few dogs over the years and It goes to show you can learn something new everyday.
