Had an invite yesterday from Pickerup who is one of my shooting mentors to join him on on some recently picked peas, this was his fourth outing on this perm and he and his usual shooting partner had over 200 pigeons off this field in the last few weeks. This farmer is a bird conservationist so Pickerup has to tread very carefully around the perm and always rings in advance as he has been refused on a number of occasions due to various birds nestings etc...

He rang the farmer who gave permission and said there were lots of crows about,on arrival 300+ mixed corvids took off and so did 50+ pigeons..looks promising especially as there we still lots of peas left from the pickers.

We had to be careful were we set up as the farmer had mentioned there was a nest in the middle of the field and we had a public footpath to consider so we set up with the wind and sun behind us and the footpath well to the left, the only negative was that directly behind us was a field of tall grass which we couldn't walk on.

set up with a dozen flock shells and two dead birds on the magnet,we had a few visitors however a nice flightline opened up and the pigeon numbers were growing nicely but they were not committing to the pattern. After a number of changes to the pattern and moving the magnet 4 times things improved and we had some good sport. We both had a couple of nice doubles and some nice high birds..missed a few sitters s well...

We finished the day on 101 pigeons picked and 7 mixed corvids. We had at least another 12 that we couldn't pick due to them landing in the tall grass.

It still amazes me how far a pigeon can sometimes travel when hit hard,we were picking our shots carefully to try to ensure none landed behind us which probably cost us another 10+ birds.

I hope pickerup doesn't mind me mentioning his age, lets say he is 70 + years young who has had two cataract operations and can still hit a pigeon at 50 yds (and he uses 71/2 carts)

He knows were every bird has landed and will spend 10mins finding a bird to ensure none are left behind. He came back from picking up four which had landed in a nearby tree covered in nettles and scratches..."that's four more for the pot" .. top bloke

Yesterday was another step in my learning curve on how to decoy and shoot pigeons, thanks Pickerup for a great days sport and banter..... :good::good:

PICS WILL FOLLOW WHEN i SORT THIS NEW PHONE OUT..
