perhaps the advice your getting is wrong. I've trained a few labs now to a pretty good standard if I may say so myself, and before all training sessions I'll let them go play to do as they please and every now and then when I'm not really feeling a training session I'll get out a tennis ball tell them go play and throw the ball about for them to chase at their leisure . Training should all be about fun and keeping the dogs guessing.

But isn't that the fun?

Instead of letting them play with other dogs their fun is having a retrieve, swimming etc. Dogs don't see it as work and one as play I wouldn't have thought, its' all interaction with another being with a purpose. Mine enjoys retrieving, maybe a bit too much at times.

He plays with my other dogs in the garden, play fighting etc but not in the park or fields, he will run about with my other dogs but I keep a close watch. I want him to find me as the being that is the most fun for him instead of him running off to play with other dogs chasing rabbits etc as dogs do.

When I am training him I am always changing things about so it could be no retrieve, long retrieve, blind retrieve, water retrieve, long periods sitting close, sitting at a long distances away, so each training sessions is different and I guess fun.

However I am open to suggestions and just a novice in gun dogs. Cannot for the life of me get him on the stop whistle.

Richard, I did it by having him on the lead, blow & tell him sit with a hand signal all at the same time.

If he's at a distance & don't sit, run up to him hands either side of his face & gently push him back so he sits.

He'll get the idea after a few times. Even the wife's goldie can do it so can't be that hard, it's the only thing it can do

Having said all that put a bird in front of him & it all goes out the window

I have a chessie who has made it to 12 years of age. Most of my own experiences of owning and handling the breed have already been well covered here but I have to say that while they are a formidable wildfowling dog, a lab is much more easily trained and maintained. I have enjoyed my time owning training and running a chessie but I won't be going for another. Labs are the easier option and are also effective.

That said, the chessie is the smartest dog I have ever owned. Smarter than me in fact. He is still as strong as a bull. He doesn't start fights but if anything is stupid enough to start something, then he most certainly finishes it. They are a hard breed and are certainly a breed apart.

I stole this from a American forum

The lab and golden think: "My humans give me food, shelter and love; they must be gods."

The Chesapeake thinks: "My humans give me food, shelter and love; I must be a God."

Aint that the truth.

  • 3 weeks later...

Iv got a 13 month old, male cheasapeake.

He's not aggressive towards other dogs but he has been well socialised .

He usually completely ignores other dogs, unless he decides he wants to play.

Same for strangers when we are out, he ignores them, He doesn't greet anyone he doesn't know just walks around them.

But often people see the big wooly dog and try and stroke/cuddle him assuming he's a big softy!!

All I can say is unless I knew a male chessy well I wouldn't get up in his face.

Other than that excellent around the house, seems easy to train, once we both agreed who was in charge!

Overall I like him a great deal, and he seems to have bonded with me like no other dog iv ever owned.

He sits all evening with his massive head resting on my knee and follows me everywhere.

I done a lot of Research into Chessies before getting one.I was aware of the breed probably 20 odd yrs ago.

Chessie's come in all Shapes,Sizes and colours. For example a sister of my Dog was a big Rangey looking girl and was nearly white in Colour. She died at 4 yrs old from a hear attack.

Oversized and undersized Dogs are advised to be avoided. In saying that i know of a Dog Chessie that is not much bigger than an averaged sized Spanial and is a fine working dog.

I would urge anyone considering getting one to think long and hard before they purchase. Chessie's are certainly not a first timers dog and you will have to be strong willed to get on top of them.

I need to be bringing another Dog on soon and it wont be a Chessie' I have cut my fowling way back due to family life ect and i just would not do a Chessie any justice at present.

i would advice anyone "unless you are a dedicated Fowler who Shoots regularly throughout the season and have plenty of time to spend with the dog in the off season' not to get one just for their looks.

Chesapeakes dont do laying about' they need to be active all yr round' not only because they want to be active but it is also very important for their Health and well being.

i have many photos dating back to pre digital' from when my boy was a pup' right through his training and working life.

this is one of my favourites.

Hi guys ,funny how times change ,only a few years ago say 10 or 15 the very mention of the word Chesapeake brought howls of derision people falling over them self's to tell the longest most gullible tale of Chessies they could dream up .. I for one did not care as i have owned them ( or they owned me ! ) for over 30 years now .. you know what I don't argue with them they all knew best !!! I go along with their tales about having two boats to go fowling one for you and your mate and the other for the dog ? in case he eats your mate !!! Having a training aid ,yes a chunk of 4x2 you need it with a Chess they said !!! you all can tell me lots more no doubt ! But back in 82 My Custer was the only Chessie to be seen on those famous inland Ouse washes , now they are to common last year at least 6 or 7 were out working to my knowledge alone ..I must admit I love it the way it is only a few about and all with owners who have listened and asked for help were needed . I sold one to a local fowler years back a lovely dog pup he was adamant he wanted it for trialing , my thought of this trialler achieving with one of my dogs got the better of me , I did for a while tell him a bitch would be best but he wore me down and took the dog a year later he had passed it to a nephew i think who then had so he told me the best fowling dog ever !! the Trialler well he knew best ,would not listen , had to have a dog and to top it all knew what to do !! that says it all !!! I made the mistake of thinking he knew better then me as he had trained so many dogs , My old Nan used to say " theirs always one " I never extol my dogs over any one else s ,whats the point ? we all love our dogs and they all do no wrong !!! Us fowlers are a independent breed and so our dogs should be also ,the main thing is to have a dog so what you reap you collect as wounding and not retrieving to the bag will be the downfall of us all .. As to Chesapeake's in my view luckily we are still thin on the ground not many born each year so hard to find ,but we are still one breed one standard ,a true working dog that excels in the show ring as they do in the field , not a trialing dog by any means (( Some are and good at it to boot ) but most aren't as they have that streak of independence that says ,So you want the job done ? well dam well stop interfering and let me get on and do it ! teach and train but then get them out with you working as that's how they learn their trade ,not you throwing dummy's all over the shop !!! my tatty girl last season lost me only one duck of all those she had to go for , oh and by the way we work as a team I dont send her for dead duck that are just as easy for me to walk to and collect shes my mate not my servant !! the duck a Shoveller had crashed in dead ,you all know the ones were the shooter tells you its just their , mate , dead as a do do , and can you find it ? No , but your dog goes of 100 yards to the side while he yells at you to tell your stupid dog its just their were he dropped it stone dead !!! dog comes back with a lively wigeon from the near distance I give him his duck and say dispatch it and don't ask me again OK !! that shovel er ,well as she got to about 10 ft from it the duck just righted itself took one look at this brown monster speeding towards it and took of to dissapear along the wash gaining height and away !!!! all three of us could not believe it , Beaver the Ches was a bit put out about that as when she got back shore side gave me the most odd look as if to say well kill the bloody thing next time please !!! Oh and that same Beaver has just been made up to a Show Champion She is true to type and meets the breed Standard with excellent confirmation and the Chesapeake Breed standard is the working one !!! So yuo want a Chesapeake ? as Fagin sings in Oliver , I think you had better think it out again !
