timing chain- porsche cayenne

Anyone ever had one done?

Cayenne wouldnt start yesterday. Parked it the day before, turned the key yesterday to a nasty whirring noise. Turned the key again to get the same and immediately feared the worst.

Engine management light on.

Computer plugged in this morning and a call to say that compression is all over the place and it has almost certainly thrown a chain. Not good news.

Its having some more time spent on it tomorrow. Compression test etc.

I'm really hoping that as it wasn't actually running then there wont be any valve damage. If there is then maybe I will reconsider my options but for now it looks like a new chain kit and lots of hope.

Has anyone ever had it done?

Any idea of costs?

Anyone want to make me feel better and tell me that its unlikely to have valve damage?!?!

Its a 2003 4.5l v8 cayenne s. (Not the turbo)

It's a Porsche, it going to be expensive whatever the outcome.

 

Lets hope the valves are OK though.

Yeah I'm only too aware that it aint gonna be cheap! To be honest I have no idea how much, garage owners are mates so know i will be looked after.

Hoping someone has experience and might be able to give me some idea of what it cost.

Also whether valve damage is likely?

Your question really has no answer, until the engine is stripped. Any opinions are just that... Might have got away with it, might not... Can your garage owner mate not give you an idea of what it might cost? Sorry, that's not much help.

Mike737, i only spoke to them, well their head mechanic, briefly. He confirmed my fears and arranged to get it to the garage.

He says its only an hour to do a compression test and probably stick a bore scope in there.

I was just wondering if anyone had done the belts and what they had paid.

Judging on what my daughter used to pay for a full service on hers at the main dealer, i think it might be a pain in the wallet. good luck

I didnt think main dealer serice prices were too bad. Less than £500 for a major service.

I have been told though that it is never that simple and that every possible fault is found and charged massively for!

Best thing I can hope for at the moment is no valve damage

To be honest I had an absolute bargain when I bought the motor and dont think i will bother if its going to be a massive bill. Will sell it on as it is.

Sooooo....a timing chain kit is £900 + vat! 22 hours labour and no guarantee that there is no valve damage.

I can't be bothered with breaking it. A specialist porsche breaker has offered £2k

But the same dealer has offered me an engine......guarantee, 69k (compared to my 140k) delivered to the door with old engine taken away for sub £3k. £3-400 to swap them and we are good to go.

 

I dont know how to do a poll on here but what do you guys reckon??

 

1. Scrap it. £2k in pocket

2. Sell on ebay and hope for the best

3. Timing kit and hope no other damage £2kish

4. Change the engine £3k and a bit.

 

I am leaning towards the replacement engine as even then the car will have cost me a grand total of under £9k and I do really like it.

 

What do you reckon?

I'd go with the replacement engine, if yours has done 140 k something else is going to fail. Just remember everything else on the vehicle has done 140k. The motor industry designs vehicles to last ten years or 100,000 miles, most vehicles will do more especially if they are looked after, but you have already done 40% over that. If you like every vehicle and it's in good condition it could be worth a punt.

Take the 2k and walk away. The gear box will go next. Then the clutch and fly wheel.

My biggest concern with this option is what I would buy next?

£2k doesnt buy a lot, £5k (2 from dealer and 3 i would be spending on engine) buys a bit more but nothing compared to the porker.

So I could well end up spending a whole lot more and getting something stupid like a 911.

I dont desperately need anything else as I have a few vehicles but I have really enjoyed the porker, best car I have ever had, so would want something to compete with all that offers. Not a petrol head by any means but the porsche has the power, speed, luxury, prestige etc. I know its nothing really flash and there are plenty of "better" motors about but for a poor builder like me it was quite a treat :-)

I was always told that the repair bills for a car - any car - are related to what the original price of the car was, not what YOU paid for it. If you buy a car for £5k, and it originally cost £50k, then expect bills related to a £50k car.

 

The problem with any of those luxury 4*4s is that when something goes wrong, it's usually horribly expensive to put right. When they get to 3rd / 4th owner and 10+ years old, a lot of people who've bought them can barely afford to run them, and skimp on maintenance costs. Meaning that things become even more likely to break.

You say you got it for a bargain. It was cheap because it's horribly expensive to run (what's it do, 15-17 mpg?), because even putting tyres on it is terrifying bill (if you put good tyres on, rather than ditchfinders), and because somebody probably got burnt on it with an unexpected bill.

 

Don't get me wrong, I've been there, done that. Had 3 Range Rovers in my time, the last one had to have a new gearbox and torque converter (£3k bill), and seemed to continually need money spending on bits and pieces.

Or stick it on Autotrader for about £4k (obviously mention the problems as to why its going for that price). Looking there, similar age good condition ones seem to go for around £7k, so that leaves someone room to drop in a new engine for £3k.
