timing chain- porsche cayenne

Or stick it on Autotrader for about £4k (obviously mention the problems as to why its going for that price). Looking there, similar age good condition ones seem to go for around £7k, so that leaves someone room to drop in a new engine for £3k.

If I was buying a motor knowing I needed to change the motor I would want it cheaper than the going rate minus the engine cost. (Ie) this motor £2500 max,certainly not £4000.

While on the subject of motors going bang, I just got of the phone to my little brother (he is only 21). He has a 2012 range rover sport tdv6 45,00miles on the clock. my dad owned the car from new then my bro baught it of him when it was 3 years old so we know the history of the car. Phoned me early hours yesterday morning, broken down on the a1. Got it recovered and taken to a Landy specialist. They informed him It had chucked the belt of the alternator and this is usually caused by the alternator ceasing (common fault on this model). Result he thought as when he told me how the car died I said it sounded like the turbo had let go.

 

He got a call from the garage today, they had a proper look at it today. Turns out the engine has gone bang in a big way and is seized solid.prob caused by the turbo letting go and bits getting through the engine.

 

No warranty on the car and 10 to £15,000 for a new engine.

 

What would people do in this situation? My dad has had a new range every 3 years for as long as I can remember so has a good relationship with the dealer. He going to see what they are willing to do about it but I can't see them doing much.

If its FMDSH then Jaguar Land Rover should make a substantial good will offer. For example, out 2007 330d has a abs pump fault, quite common and well documented on the web, Only the first 3 years were dealer then indy servicing but to correct schedule, Invoice was £2400 and they paid 1700. So 2/3rds on a seven yr old with 50/50 history, it took some pushing for tho.

Yes, 3 year unlimited mileage.

 

If JLR try to claim they've got no responsibility, then his only choice would be to commission an independent engineer's report, and (depending on what that says) use it as a stick on JLR : pay up, or I'll take you to court. He should get at least 50% paid for, if not considerably more.

Just had a text of my brother. He has spoke to land rover customer care and they agree it is totally unacceptable and were quite helpful. I was mistaken its a 2011 and apparently there have been issues with the early cars in that model going bang. They want the car in for repair but not till the 6th august.

Doesn't surprise me, regardless of the 3 year warranty common on most cars, the fact is they'd have been slaughtered by the "fit for purpose" argument which is easily made given the age and mileage. Any car should do an absolute minimum of 60k over the first 5 years.

Put engine in and get rid, the porsche engine and gear boxes are terrible, the closest thing to get would be a vw tourag.

Engine on order. Not nice shelling out so much on a used car but it seems the best option. Even with the cost of the work I shouldn't be far off breaking even if I decide to sell. I reckon I could run it for another year or two and not lose any more.

But once its done I will decide whether to keep it or change it.

 

Anyone fancy buying a lovely porsche??????

When I used to be on the spanners I did front and rear discs,pads and sensors on a boxster 3.2s and the customer supplied his own genuine Porsche parts. Cost about £1000 alone for parts. They do seem to have crazy prices attached just because it says 'Porsche'.

 

As a side note my boss has got an E39 BMW M5. The door handle off a stock 5 series are £13. Because all the M5's were painted in colours only available on M sports the exact same handle now costs £120. He calls it M tax.

Well I have done a fair bit of chasing and looks like I have sourced a couple of engines and they should be under £2000!

They are both from breakers and guaranteed.

66k and 90k. Still haggling with both to get the best price but just a bit of calling/emailing seems to have paid off and the whole thing isnt going to be as bad as it seemed. Under £2500.

Should be done in a fortnight.

Heres hoping.

If you really like the car go the new engine route, but with the milage you have done there will no doubt be more money to spend on it.

 

Personaly and if you have the finances. Chin it off for 2 grand and use the money as a deposit for something else and put it down to an unfortunate situation and move on.

The chains are cheap, the labour to get to them and then change them are the issue.

 

If you buy the chains from Porsche and get an independent garage to fit them then it will be a lot cheaper, I saw my mechanic do a V8 and that was done on the cheap (spare time labour rates) and that cost the guy £1200 including parts.

 

You can always get a reconditioned engine on a program (you buy the engine and return the old one) from a specialist or have a look at a breaker, you may get lucky.
