Oh my Cod.

I had a boat trip off Whitby yesterday .

Up at 2 am for the 3.5 hour drive :/

Weather talked of being a bit breezy first thing but dropping off with some showers throughout the day.

Well they got the weather wrong , luckily the rain held off but the wind increased when it should have been dropping .

It was a little lumpy but I have been out in worse.

We started off by catching Mackerel for bait which did not take long at all as they were only about 10ft down under the boat.

Once we had the bait we set off for the first drift of the day , there were soon a few cod and ling coming aboard and I opened my account with a nice cod caught on squid , that was followed by another on the next drift and things were looking good.

My next three fish were all ling , which was not great as I am not particularly partial to them , I returned a couple and gave a larger one to another guy on the boat.

A quiet for me then happened while everyone else were still getting a few fish .

So I changed over from bait to soft rubber shads and eels and from then on some nice cod came at fairly regular intervals throughout the day I finished taking home 14 cod between 4 - 8lb , returned several smaller ones along with a few ling .

Trouble is with having a decent catch they need preparing , by the time I got home and had the fish sorted it was gone midnight , a long day !

Sounds like a cracking day out.

A former neighbour has always offered to take me to Whitby, wreck fishing, in return for taking him out shooting. While I've always fancied the idea I'm not a great sailor, even on big boats I'm better off aloft than indoors.

I once went on a tiny boat on a ATC trip where we visited the radio room, and I was about green by the time I got back up top. I would probably be ok with some travel pills (as I was on trips to Isle of Man) but 8 hours miles out at sea is a hard way to find out.

Some great eating there, well worth the long day.

Great catch well done, looks as if cod are making a bit of a come back.

Blackpowder

There are plenty of cod there, but they are nothing like the stamp of fish we used to catch years ago when fish of 15-20lb were caught on every trip .

Now days the fish perhaps average 4 lb with a few better ones , good eating size though .

The style of fishing has changed too , it used to be 50lb rods heavy line and pirks , now its light tackle and soft rubber baits with a bit of bait fishing .

good write up that its funny how times have changed from massive heavy pirks to shads and soft rubber times change and move on suppose but they are for the good carrying your box full of them often climbing down steps to the boat was exciting .hope to get out my self soon from the tyne my local area , but would not rule out a trip to whitby , there are a few boats but mistress always seems to crop up on charter boat uk with some good reports .

thanks
