Ton on the peas with Dbw1shrops

Shot the same field of peas as last week. Farmer text me this morning to say I needed to get on there. Had already planned to go this morning. Rain delayed setting up and set up by 12. Invited fellow PW member, Dbw1shrops (Dave) as I owed him an outing....but he couldn't join me unitl 4. Set up in the opposite corner to last week. Plenty of traffic but birds again did not decoy well. Changed chokes to 1/2 and 3/4 and had some nice crossers coming into trees 30-40 yards to my right. Had 40 by time Dave turned up. Birds still not decoying well so played with pattern, adding one of Dave's flappers and moving magnet to our far left. This seemed to work well but repeatedly had birds flare away and repeatedly found birds in middle of pattern on their backs. Traffic slowed to a trickle by 8 and we packed up at 8:30. We both shot over 30 birds each and finished on 100 picked and probably lost another 10 or so.

Good to have some chat in the hide and good to pay Dave back. He contacted me on PW and took me out 2 years ago when I was a complete novice.

Some good shooting there.

If you have shot the field before it is not surprising that the birds were shying from the decoys.

This and the adjacent field have been shot several times since the peas came into flower. I've had 6 days and shot over 400 birds and I know another gun has had at least one session and shot 83. So question is - still lots of pigeon traffic on flightlines over these fields and most birds do not commit into the decoy pattern. Of these, have three types. a) they keep on the flightline, b) they turn towards the pattern and then turn away again to rejoin the flightline, typically just out of range or c) they turn towards the pattern and then turn and land in nearby trees (again typically just out of range). I can understand type a and b been wary birds but why land nearby if wary??

My other query is the farmer has now put 2 bangers on this field and I imagine they will stay until harvest. Hopefully this will keep the birds off until harvest but will they still be interested in the peas once the harvest is in and the bangers are back in the shed??....Will they will still be interested, will they have forgotten what a magnet looks like and no longer be wary about the bangs??.....there is always hope!
