Winchester Select Energy

Hi all,

I am looking to buying my first shotgun and have been looking at the Winchester Select Energy. A few people have said it's good and has good write ups. It would have to be second hand but am struggling to find one for sale. The only one online I have seen is from SGC but I have spoken with them and it has already been sold - http://www.sportsmanguncentre.co.uk/product/9559d0e4535931023124813/Winchester+Select+12G+30'22/

Does anyone know where I could pick one up. If not, are there any other recommended over & under guns for a first time clay shooter? Budget is around £700.

Thanks in advance

Yes, they are good guns in my opinion. Mate with whom I went to the CLA has one and I've shot it many times. It is the topcoat (?) model. They are a heavy gun but very tactile.

There are one or two on Guntrader but I think you may be struggling in that price range.

If you like the Winchester you will probably like the Miroku, Browning or Winchester 101 range as they are built to a very similar design and share similar handling capabilities. You would find any of these older models in your price range.

Have a look on Malmo Guns website; there is a gorgeous Miroku on there in pristine condition for less than a 1000.

Think this is the one if you're interested and can strrreeetchh that budget a little:http://www.guntrader.co.uk/3rdParty/Malmogunscom/Detail.php?NewGunID=150602144647001

I have handled this gun and can't believe no one has bought it, the barrels look as if they were just blued yesterday.

Got one which is my main clay gun and was bought from Rugby Gun shop at the shooting show.

R+K Stockcraft in Milton Keynes had a second hand one in stock the other week that was in mint condition if its of any help.

My view is I love mine, it holds better patterns than my old medallist and the adjustable cheek piece give me a much better gun fit. It is a large gun and heavy but that suits me as I always shoot well with Browning and the heavier clay guns. Operation has been flawless and its have about 2000 cartridges through it since I bought it at the shooting show in February I cant recommend mine enough.

Have a look here http://www.guntrader.co.uk/Guns-For-Sale/Winchester_Shotgun_Select-Sporter_For-Sale_140930100422001

Often see them on Guntrader well under £700

I may be wrong but I don't think that one is the 'Energy' model, although there is a left-handed model at that price.

Thanks for the replies. I have seen a couple more now. One in particular is a trap version instead of the sporter. I will mainly be shooting sporting but with the multichoke and adjustable stock will it make that much difference and would I still be able to shoot sporting successfully with it?

As a first gun I wouldn't advise buying a Trap gun to shoot mostly Sporting.

Dedicated Trap guns are set up differently to Sporters and it can be frustrating enough as it is without complicating things, but, it's entirely up to you. Personally I wouldn't buy a Trap version of a gun because I couldn't lay my hands on a Sporter of the same model.

I know it's frustrating to wait but rushing into the wrong decision can be very frustrating and expensive to boot.

These are decently built guns which should last a long time and at £7-800 are a good choice used but I'm a bit mystified as to why people are describing them as heavy. The 3 or 4 I've tried, including one about 3 weeks ago, felt very light and were clearly well under 8lbs. There's one on GT weighed by the dealer at 7lb 6oz which IMO is way too light for clay shooting.

Light guns recoil more and even if you're not sensitive to recoil it causes more fatigue than a heavier gun with less recoil. Very few regular clay shooters use guns weighing under 8lbs and some are well over 9lbs.

I'd spend that money on a used Miroku or Beretta.

I've made a boo boo. :| The Winchester Select mate has is the Select with the grey laminated stock which comes in at around 8 1/2 lbs ( he phoned me earlier this evening and I asked him ) which while is a good weight for a Sporter, being a similar weight to my old Winchester Sporter, nowadays seems heavy to me as even when shooting clays ( not often admittedly) I use lightweight game guns.

I like this laminated stocked gun and have shot it often. Worth consideration perhaps.
