I have a 7th month old Black lab dog. Training has been going well, reasonably consistent with sit/stay and recall. Walking to heel on and off lead progressing well. Not by any means top of the class but about what you would expect from a young pup. He is really enthusiastic with very simple retrieves with a 1/2lb dummy or tennis ball and has been great fun.

However in the last week he has started acting like a teenager. Not all the time, but getting more frequent. He has started just ignoring commands, while walking to heel off lead will them just walk ahead, when I recall him he will avoid eye contact and ignore me. When he does recall he will sit about a meter or so in front of me so I need to take a step forward to put the lead on giving him time to get away.

Any tips on how to get through this?

Big Bird will be along shortly to tell you how to stop this teenage rebellion

We all need PLAY TIME.

Over doing WORK, Will cause exactly what you have got.

Lighten up, its only a puppy.

I guess I didn't give the full story. I do spend quite a bit of time with him just playing and socialising with other dogs. I am only talking about the 10mins or so each day when we do a bit of work. I now he doesn't have a very long attention span at this age that's why I keep the training short and try and make it fun and rewarding.

Most dogs go through this stage , he is just as you say now acting like a teenager , they get to a stage where they realise they can have more fun by ignoring you and doing as they please.

Firstly if he will not return and stands off as you say , turn around and start walking away , he will come to you sooner or later and praise him when he does.

Also do not call him to you when you know there is a good chance he will ignore you , like when he has his head down on a scent , wait until he is looking at you and then call him in.

Too much, too young, he doesn't understand what he's been taught and you have moved on too quickly. He's not a "teenager" yet, you've that to look forward to and it'll be ten times worse if you don't get this bit right. Slow down, the foundations take months not weeks.

Don't give him any commands you are not 100% sure he knows and will listen to.
