Watsontotty
Hi, I'm new to the forum and have a few questions and was hoping I could grab some advice from the experts on here, I bought my 12 year old son his first gun for Christmas with the idea of going to a local range and shoot some targets. I bought him a Gamo whisper fusion which I picked up from a guy local who bought it and didn't use it so got a bargain and to date it's only been out the box once and not used, the gun requires a scope so which should I get as I don't want to spend massive money yet still want something decent. The other option is to buy another rifle second hand with a quality scope already on it, had a look around and there are options out there but I'm unsure if the Gamo Whisper Fusion is suitable for the range and what would be a better up grade. Not looking to spend too much money but Ive seen rifles around £150 to £200 with decent quality optics already on it but what's the best option would you say. Thanks
aga man
Hello mate and welcome to the forum. I'm certainly no expert and can't really comment on suitability of your rifle, but £40-£50 should buy you a scope that is plenty good enough. Something like a nikko sterling mountmaster or hawke sport in 3-9x40 would be fine for target shooting with your son's rifle. robbiep
Firstly, welcome to PW ! Virtually any relatively cheap Hawke scope will suffice. Spend £50 or £60 on a brand new scope, and it'll do everything you'd need. As an example, a Hawke Airmax 3-9 x 40 is listed by my local gunshop as £70, and you can probably find it cheaper. You'd need a set of mounts with it too, which £20 would take care of. Again, I'm sure there are lots of secondhand scopes and mounts for sale, and going that route you can probably get set up for £50. As to how good the Airmax is ? Well, there's nothing wrong with it, and I've got a slightly better version (4-12 x 50) on both a air rifle and a 22rimfire rifle. A little bit about those numbers : 3-9 x 40 means it has variable magnification (3* to 9*), adjustable in the field, and the '40' is the size of the objective lens (the bit that gathers the light). The Gamo won't ever be a world-beater, but there's certainly nothing wrong with it as a first air rifle. If your son really enjoys the sport, then you could always upgrade in the future, but there's not much point in spending a fortune on a gun if it might be a passing fad. Lastly, if you put up your (rough) location in your profile, then I'm sure you'll find other PW members close by, some of whom may well be willing to help out, possibly even with a scope for free. I know I've got one sitting in a box, which is there 'just in case' I need it in future (though it's been sat for 5 years now!).

Thanks for the advice and I've tried to update my profile somewhat and I'm from Northumberland so possibly not many me members from up my way lol, I should have said back in the day I was a very keen shooter and I'm planning on shooting along with my son at the range and then onto some rabbits. It's always good to start the young ones off early. +1 with Fred's comments. I've had an AGS on my air rifle for a couple of years now, and it's fine. I've also had a Hawke, for an air rifle and rim fire, and they're fine for those to. I'd hang on for a day or 2, as you may find a PW member who can help you out.
