Issue with 2005 Ford Ranger

All,

After 6 weeks between ford and mazda I still am

No further forward with my issue.

To get the truck to fire I have to either lock and unlock a few times or turn the key off and on until I hear a click behind the dash and it then starts straight away

ford said it was the keyless unit (change £360) no help, then sent to mazda on recommendation from Ford (ignition relay and diagnostic £110) apparently now it could be something to do with fuel pump.

I don't understand how it can be the pump as, as soon as I hear the click behind the glove box it starts first time.

I've totally ran out of ideas and it's getting costly.

If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate your help.

Thanks

Alfie

Hi Paul/Cawder

It's been plugged in and there were no error codes.

TBH both Ford and Mazda have not been great for main dealers. They have now suggested a fuel pump specialist. I get the feeling they would rather just get rid of the issue. I spoke to the pump specialists and they said it could be the issue. £300 to & £400 is the estimate which I have no problem with if it cures the problem but you feel everyone's going through a list rather than actually knowing. I'm expecting new ECU suggestion next which I would then probably just leave alone until the truck dies.

The most feasible answer I have had was on the Ranger forum when someone suggested the ignition relay again which didn't work but it made sense.

I was hoping someone would have come across the issue but obviously not a common one.

You know what I would suggest, talk to an AA man. They get called out to millions of immobiliser type issues because its one of the commonest reasons for cars not starting these days and seem to know more about the subject than anybody. Main agent mechanics are now becoming the worst of the breed, no ability to do anything except plug in and read the screen. Good tip from Firdom, keys can do some very strange things, could it be something as silly as the battery needs replacing?

Sorry mate but your dealers have not been great, they're just swapping parts out to see if they get lucky on a hunch

Fault codes or not a decent tech would plug in and not just look for fault codes but also use the live data to see what's working (or what the ecu thinks should be working), whether it be immobiliser, fuel pump or whatever and then actually checking the feeds/components out to see what is working

If the truck is turning over but will not fire up and you can hear a click after which it does fire up then you most likely you have a relay switching behind the dash, you (or more to the point your tech) needs to find out what the relay powers and then look for a relationship to the lock / unlock / turning on and off regime, most likely to be immobiliser or fuel pump.

Try the fuel pump relay, I had a Ford Galaxy that would do a similar thing. I had it from my boss for virtually pennies as it sometimes would start and sometimes wouldnt. Turning the ignition on and off on days it was playing up would trip the relay until eventually it started, replaced the relay for £5.00 and from then on it was spot on.

The fact you could hear a click from behind the dash would imply it is either the relay itself or something that controls it playing up such as immobilisers. Can you try connecting the fuel pump to a different power supply to cut out all the relay and immobiliser only needs to be a wire for testing purposes?

I had an x reg ranger and it did exactly as you describe, turn the key and just got a few clicks, to the best of my knowledge (it was a while ago) my local mechanic bypassed the barrel and put a button on the dash, still used the key to turn on the ignition but it used to start on the button every time, he charged me £10

As others have said. Relays can cause havoc.

Don't trust dealerships now! They are not mechanics anymore!

There will not be a fault code for a relay and any fault code aassociated from a struggling relay will be so vaguely written the expert reading it usually interprets it completly wrong!

The hand book should show you where the relays are. A clean of the contact surfices may help.

Dodgy immobiliser systems don't give the ECU the green light sometimes. Is there a master key?

U.

What about a proper auto electrician we had a problem with the relays on my wifes electric windows because rhey automatically dropped to allow the roof to fold he found it in a couple of minutes changed a relay all for 20 quid including calling at the house to do it could be worth a try
