Meet Ralphy.

A one year old Lab, picked him up at the weekend, his old owner has had a change in circumstances so was looking to get rid. He is with us on a trail to see how he settles down with the kids and our 7 year old beagle.

Not sure I will ever get him to the stage where I could take him shooting but he should make a nice loving family pet.

At the moment we are just giving him plenty of walks and seeing how he settles with the other dog.

Thanks, after seeing a lot of people start training their dogs from an early age I was unsure if I had missed the boat with him. It would be very nice to one day be able to take him shooting with me.

Many didn't bother training a dog till it was a year old in times past. These days we often start a dog too soon by contrast

This is true fact, I might start the odd one at ten months but not if he's puppy like they are all very different so twelve months is plenty soon enough for a lab.

My lab is four this Sept I was holding off starting training proper till I could see him ready but wife started at about 7 months so I cracked on

It was too early the early stuff was hard work that which was done over 1 year went in so much better

I bet if I just socialised this dog I could have started training proper at 18mnths and still done good

Has a real desire to learn stuff now at four but depends on the dog and how spoiled it's been previous

Well not sure if this is going to be a popular decision, but our beagle is just not taken to him, they are fighting a lot, this coming from the beagle how can sleep all day is very out of character.

There is also something about him that is making my mum unsure about him, she is not scared of him herself, more has a weird feeling when he looks at you, it's almost as though you are not sure what he is going to do next, which is a worry when he is around my young niece and nephew.

So it looks like he is going to go back to his old owner, he was only here for a trial, which has not worked out.

The crazy thing is that the family have decided that they liked having a second dog around and have decided the best way forward is to get a puppy. Atleast that way the new dog will grow up around my kids and hopefully the beagle will take to a puppy better than a larger dog.
