simpson diamond back helmet

Hi chaps, does anyone know if these are road legal for a bike or not. I've seen some conflicting adverts stating that they're legal and others saying the opposite.

my Arai is starting to fall to bits, the foam pads are crumbly and the inside is a bit grotty for it, which is a bit alarming considering it's not that old or had much use so I won't be buying another.

advice, recommendations, and general pee take most welcome.

In simple terms they cannot be legally sold in the UK unless they meet BS 6658:1985 and carry the Kitemark.

It starts to get really vague then because as long as a helmet provides 'equivalent' protection to BSI/EC, you can wear it but not sell it. How you prove it is the hard bit.

If you've survived, you've proved it, if not, well, you won't care, will you

thing is, there's loads on ebay from uk sellers, obviously for the car racers I guess. I tried a blacked out visor once, for all of a day, the journey home in the dark was a slow one

i'm still considering a stig lid, it seems daft that they don't meet approval as I can go buy a cheap one for thirty quid and be less protected. And yet it makes no difference that I could wear full on leathers or go out on the bike in my underpants and plod wouldn't bat an eyelid.

I was once pulled for riding in shorts and a t-shirt. Nothing plod could do but it didn`t stop him giving me a lecture and wasting my time. No hard feelings on my part, I quite understood where he was coming from. I guess when you have to scrape someone off the road a few times you`d rather stop someone and give them advice than see it happen again. What the copper didn`t know was that I was only riding about 600m in total, going from my house to where I kept my bike.

You are no better or less protected in an a approved DOT helmet what ever the price, All the shell's have to meet the same spec. What you get for the extra are sometimes quieter helmets, more comfortable helmets, and better graphics and fittings.

I suspect the Simpson helmets don't met type approval due to their shape and the fact they could snag an object in a crash and cause worse neck injuries.

that's not quite right coldweld, while I agree they all meet the minimum standard, the more expensive lids will exceed it by quite a bit. my first aria lasted me over 15 yrs before I finally treated myself to something less smelly, a cheap one for well under a ton, made of plastic, and which duly smashed to smithereens when I dropped it, its replacement was another aria, bought in 2006, the one I currently own which hasn't done so well. I've had to replace the foam pad that fits the top of my noodle as the old foam started to crumble giving me black dandruff  and now the vinyl on the inside of the chin guard is starting to peel! I didn't think my breath was that bad
