Some tips for beginners using whirlies/magnets

Many people seem to have problems with certain magnets that have only a single nut and no locking bolt.

DO NOT take it as given, that the red (brown) and black (blue) wires should ALWAYS be attach d to the relevant plus and minus poles of the battery.

ALWAYS check that the rotation is in the correct direction to TIGHTEN the nut, as get it the wrong way round, and the nut will come undone, meaning the complete head of the magnet WILL come off, and if you're out of luck, it will damage the thread too. It may also damage the arms, and even any decoys you have on there. NOT checking can get very expensive.

ALSO, many people seem to thing that pro flap or hydra flap are for some reason shiney and scaring birds away.

MORE THAN LIKELY however, is the arms are flashing in the sun as the magnet rotates. You may not be able to see it from your position, it doesn't mean the birds can't, and this is very often the case on a bright day. Especially if the paint on the arms is of the GLOSS type rather than Matt, and even with Matt, if there is moisture in the air, it will cause them to shine.

Cover the arms with camo tape, available on ebay and from A1 Decoy, and this generally cures the problem.

That should cover 99% of all magnet problems generally

Yes, flashing in the sun can cause problems with the birds!!

I give the arms of my rotary a quick spray with Matt brown undercoat aerosol paint from a car bar.

Another tip is if you are set up in the field and notice the flashing and no spray paint is to hand then make a small portion of mud and smear it on the arms. It will last the session.
