For reasons best known to myself...i have puchased a completly original 2.5 Turbo-desiel landrover engine...which i will slightly modify and turn into a thing of beauty over the autumn....to replace my turbo-desiel i have in the landrover now which is a mishmash of different engines from a sherpa van and london taxi.....i love these engines whereas every body else hates them with a passion...

i will be posting my progress over the next few weeks ....all much to your great amusement....

Originality ok yeah I can see that

So what's the plan?

Firstly............what you say is right.....when the 200 tdi first came out ... the Govt bought 6 of them for me in Tanzania....i was told to look after them but WRAG" THEM ...WHICH I DID FOR 2 YEARS........they never missed a beat...top engine ...still prefere them to the 300 which pulls like a train

Turbo-deseil...................the block goes to Briston near cromer...with the new pistons to be bored 20thou oversize...and pistons will be marked for each cylinder.....teflon coated crowns......check balance on crank/flywheel........i will rebuild head completely...high temp valves new springs new seats...cut and rubbed in ....new hot spot inserts...injector shouds blah blah blah...

front crankshaft seal modified....new shells main....conrods............you get the idea the list goes on.............

Ok but there's possibly better stuff than Teflon, I take it your trying to reduce thermal loading of the piston crown?

The first TD's didnt have coated pistons and didnt have high temp valves...the pistons got holes burnt in them then they went into "overun"...so they fitted them with coated pistons....the engine still breathed heavt because of the higher compression and poor piston to bore fit..............

ditchman likes a challenge.....(on a budget)

Highly technical stuff again. I have difficulty extending my hide poles.

i have no trouble extending my hide pole for an early morning shoot ...............

It's possible the bore tolerance could be cut further, if you can reduce the thermal loading of the piston then the piston will expand less and in a more controlled way, so the machining tolerances can be improved. All this was employed in the late 70's and 80' racing two strokes!

Well i hope Briston will sort the job out ...he knows Turbo-deseils (l/r)...........and he says providing i run it in for 500 miles it wont give any further problem............

found out why it was squirting oil out will post a picture later....have started on the stripdown and primary cleaning........

Found one of the reasons the turbo-deseil started to use loads of oil.............the oil feed pipe to the injector pump was passed its best !!!

pictures of stuff coming off the engine this morning after their first clean.......my "so called mates " didnt turn up last night to help me unload the engine so i had to start stripping it down in the damn trailer....i so wanted it on the engine table and power wash it prior to stripping....now im covered in cack...and my testicles are in a wheelbarrow....christ that engine must weigh a quarter of a ton..........

You are going to modify it to be reliable and economical ?

eat poo and die......................... :good:
