social media and FEO

When I got my FAC back in 2013 i was told by my the FEO to not share hunting and shooting stuff online which at the time sounded like a general rule and didnt bother me too much as id rather keep somethings off Facebook anyway.

but recently iv heard of a bloke near me who had a knock at the door, and the FEO had a file full of pics from his facebook and instagram of him shooting and his guns etc.. and he lost his licence.

has anyone else heard of this ?

if true, probably a bit worrying for some. from what i was told he wasn't being threatening or suggestive but was showing of his collection like many of us do on here, and to the FEO that was a reason to take them away,

any thoughts ?

I was told by my FEO (Cheshire) last year to steer clear of posting clay/pigeon shooting pics on Facebook and social media as it is a potential security risk. Being a new shooter I have followed his advice as it seems sensible, albeit a touch restrictive. I am the type to post very little on social media anyway but I can understand how it may slow the growth of the sport.

Not really sure it's entirely up to the FEO to make that decision, nor under what authorisation, but I'd need solid confirmation of the story before putting too much faith in it.

There are no laws governing what pictures firearms owners take of their firearms nor of where they post them re' social media as far as I'm aware.

Very few on here would have any firearms left if that were the case.

Well to be honest sometimes I do think that....

Here's a pic of all my guns laid out on my bed

And here's a pic of me in the airport about to go on holiday

......really is a open invitation

A bit OTT perhaps?

very true.. although you would like to think the person followed the rules and put his guns with a firearms dealer to hold until he was back in the country ;)

i do agree with not sharing the classic.. "look at all these" pics.

but if your passion is hunting, should you not be allowed to share that trophy shot with your like minded friends online ? freedom of speech ?

i suppose 98% of us have shared a pic or two but if it comes down to acting like a gun toating nut and the FEO has had some complaints.. its an easy one to use to remove his guns.

When I joined FB a while back at my daughters behest I put down some of my interests and soon after read something similar to what the op has put. I then went and ensured that these were not public anymore whilst limiting who could see any other stuff of mine.

"Someone" will be monitoring social media and these forums, I doubt the FEO's and their staff have time. It will be other mischief makers.

It is beholden on each one of us to take care in what we post and on what others post? I don't think it is just down to the official forum mods/admin but to each other and none should take offence if a fellow forum member pm's re a gaffe? It happened to me on the Airgunbbs very early on and as the guy said when I thanked him - we are here to protect each other whilst enjoying our legal pastimes?

You'd be surprised...I had several pages of what I'd commented on on another forum shoved under my nose by the then Inspector & Sgt. on one visit to Edinburgh!

Too busy to do the long delayed admin. & the like, but lots of time spare to browse the web...

That said - the atmosphere THEN was a lot more political than now (within the admin. section at least, not the capital)

I do not do Facebook. And definitely do not think it is the place to parade your guns. The site is full of anti's and other tree huggers along with an assortment of other idiots. If you want to post pictures why not stick to this and other shooting forums with like minded people

yeah cos antis, treehuggers and idiots never visit PW :)

I am sure they do but what can they make of a picture of shooting or guns on a shooting forum.also I would be prepared to gamble that the guy whoever he was that lost his ticket due to pictures on facebook is not strictly the truth as there are many clay grounds that have a facebook page and display pictures of the days shooting without any problem or getting closed down.

You will be suprised. From previous previous experience (working at Capital One in the fraud dept) its suprisingly easy. A name and a town or city location is all thats needed the rest is in the public domain and easily obtainable.

Its a shame people cant be open about their sport but given all the anti hype i can understand why feos frown on it

The simple fact is do not put anything at all on the internet that you would not put out in the public domain. My younger brother lost the plot and started putting all sorts of garbage on Facebook about aliens and ghosts and can't get rid of it now so will be forever haunted by it

By the actual ghosts?

I think that people are a little too sensitive around social media and the scare factor involved.

We are all aware of the dim potential of some Machiavellian criminal mastermind scouring Facebook to find out when people are not home to rob them of that really tasting looking lasagna they showed off in the previous post, but in all truth the statistical likelihood of someone randomly coming across your FB page and then using that to break into your house is ridiculously small.

If people want to know who have guns they don't have to trawl through the morass of inanity that is FB, they would just follow someone home from the clay ground, shooting club, gun shop or farmers field.

Thankfully the majority of the populace are not secretly waiting to find out someone they have a tenuous link with on FB with has a gun so they can be opportunistic and steal it, they quite frankly couldn't care any more then they do about someone wearing a pirate mask or a mankini.

If you get your gun stolen it is because you left it somewhere stupid and insecure or you are just dreadfully unlucky and some thieving rat got an opportunistic break of luck.

I totally get Fister's point that people posting pics of needless gore are likely to get a bit of stick and probably rightly so, it is unnecessary, but why people may feel the need not be able to share pictures of their interest/hobby/passion with friends and acquaintances for some hidden fear of being judged or robbed is just plain daft.

If my FEO wishes to discuss my opinion on that then he is very welcome indeed, shall make for a rollicking good discussion I fancy :)
