Going to test drive a Hilux

Haven't owned a truck before but I want something for doing tip runs and picking stuff up from builders merchants etc.

Going to look at a 2006 2.5 manual today. It's the lower power one and I'm wondering whether I'm going to regret not buying a higher power (3.0) or an automatic (I might be going over the odd field or so but my Jimny is manual and doesn't have a problem)

Is the ride on long journeys really that bad? I'm 6'4" - will I fit? I know these are things that should be apparent on a test drive.

It's this one:

I have used hilux trucks for over twenty years now and can honestly say that I can't fault them.I found the first model little uncomfortable after a long run but the later ones are great.I have a invincible 3.0 auto now I have had it for just over six years I have towed large trailers with a few ton on and use it across fields it has never failed an mot and has never let me down.I also have a ranger which does a lot less work and is newer but is currently in the garage having a engine rebuild.

Well. I drove it and it didn't have the acceleration of my Subaru Forester (not surprising) but was quieter at 70mph once it got there. Haven't made up my mind yet but will have a look at some others. Driving position seemed quite comfortable although on a short test drive it's difficult to really tell how it would be long term

Shop around for insurance,on my Hilux, Toyota insurance wouldnt transfer the ncb from my van because the Hilux was NOT classed as commercial. LOL. but Galdiator would. The tip at bexhill will let a Hilux go in any day and will let one with a 6ft trailor in tues and wednesdays. (arnt the Hilux's 2.2 or 3ltr?)

Edit: They will even open the height restriction bar, if you have something high on the roof rack!!

I've no idea! Didn't specifically want a hard top but glad it's got one. I presume they're easy to unbolt? Going to fit a reversing camera as I'm not that great at parking as it is.

Yep. Its easy, you have 6 or 8 clamps that unbolt. Then you have to unplug the wireing loom, if it has a brake light under the spoiler/interior light or rear window de-mister.

Edit: hard tops are worth a small fortune, the ASX is £1600 new! and they sell on ebay for £400+ all day long!

Have you checked its still on your drive?

Yes, i did have to check! especially as he's only up the road from me!
