In the game bag this week -------------

Very little !

I have done a couple of flights so far this week .

 

The first was Wednesday evening , with a decent wind I thought there may be a few fowlers about but it seemed the heavy rain had put them off and their was only one other out .

 

I saw plenty of duck mostly mallard along with some teal including one bunch of 40 or more and a few wigeon ,they were mainly to high or too wide but I did get a late chance at a mallard which I duly missed .

 

The dog found a dead seal to have a roll around in so at least he came home happy unlike me who was soaked and had to put up with the smell on the way home !

 

I was out again this morning and chose to go to the same spot since there were decent numbers about Wednesday.

 

The duck must have had a move as there was very little to be seen this morning perhaps half a dozen mallard and a couple of small bunches of wigeon , one of which offered me my only shot of the flight , I made no mistake this time and the dog was soon presenting me with my first wigeon of the season.

 

On packing up and driving out of the car park I found where all the mallard were , they were still feeding on some old stubble across from the car park ! must have been 100 or more on the field .

 

I might squeeze another flight in tomorrow evening before I return to work sunday.

Ah stubbling mallard in September. I have found that there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to dawn and dusk flighting in September,With the fowl flighting at all hours of the day.

 

I have a photo in my Album of hundreds of Mallard pouring into a stubble field on a September afternoon. Same with geese' well greys at any rate. It could be well after 10am before they flight out to the fields and will return to roost in the afternoon for a drink and a splash about and will return back to the fields later in the day again. When the days get shorter' the dawn and dusk flights tend to be more predictable with the ducks coming in from the fields early morning and the geese flight out early. With the calmer weather and longer days' there dont seem to be the same urgency about them compared to later in the year.

First Widgeon I have seen shot this year fenboy , although by now I am sure one or two have found there way in a fowlers bag up and down the country .

 

There is now the first signs of water lying about on the marsh , so with a bit of luck it wont be long till a few Widgeon start making there way on to the marshes I shoot, and with the pigeon shooting drawing to a close , the water profs will soon be out and earning there keep .

 

Strange how this week I haven't shot any pigeons because each day I was going it rained ( including today ) and yet when you go for a shot at duck this time of the year rain is just part of the package , although its a bit more annoying when it turn a lot colder .

I have seen reasonable numbers of wigeon marsh man , there were even a good few about when motty and myself went for a walk a week or so before the start of the season , this one was the first I have got a shot at though .
