Firearm statistics

Noticed a very interesting statistic in a paper this morning, there has been a significant increase in the ownership of legal firearms and despite this, there has been a decrease in firearms offences.

This needs picking up and shouting from the roof tops !!!

Would have been good to have a link! :good:

And there are a higher proportion of drugs grown or made here instead of smuggled.

The joys of illegal entry into the UK and terrorism to thank for that

Theft of legal firearms is growing I believe though as a knock on

how does this relate to the post? Are you saying they are both bad or good??very strange comparison.

my local rag The Daily Post reported same,"the number of legally owned guns in England & Wales is at its highest level for the last 20 years".

In the same story" the police watchdogs warned Britain could face new shooting massacres unless the chaotic licensing regime is overhauled.".

am i missing something here, all this based on what exactly ?

I detest that word now frequently used in the media and now treat it in the same sense as, 'the world could end tomorrow'.

This. It's a bit hard to take seriously a thread on 'Firearms statistics' without any! Link needed.

Try this as your starter for 10...................https://www.justiceinspectorates.gov.uk/hmic/news/news-feed/firearms-licensing-missing-the-mark/

and then this as reported in that wonderfully unbiased newspaper http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/sep/15/chaotic-firearms-licensing-system-is-danger-to-public-watchdog-says

In my view, although I admit it is my own pet conspirousy theory, this stems from briefings from the NPPC in their bid to acheive full cost recovery of licensing costs and their obsession with their unanounced visits initiative, the Crime stoppers Hotline, enduring markers on GP patient records and their Risk Assesment Matrix with 24/7 monitoring. What better way to acheive this than convincing the hysterical public that in order to protect them, we, the dangerous, unreliable gun owners should pay our way and submit to forensic monitoring.

On the plus side, they appear minded to warm towards the idea of a 10 year license. The following minute may be of interest..........................

CC Marsh said with regards the 10 year life certificate; this has been discussed with the Home Office and shooting representative groups. Some concern had been expressed. BASC have said they would expect to pay a fee that is commensurate with the monitoring of those licenses over that period. Two practical things have to happen, medical markers and 24/7 monitoring which would have to be done consistently.

Oh, and to debunk Kents comment "Theft of legal firearms is growing I believe though as a knock on", NaBIS report that and I quote "stolen firearms that go on to be used in criminal shootings are extremely rare"

Thanks Wymberley, and Zenduri.

I am of a similar mind in agreeing with your interpretation of things Wymberley. Matters have been as described in your first link for many years now but it is only since government cutbacks have started to hurt that police inspectorates have happened to mention their short fallings.

I see this as a cynical ploy by them to pressurise ministers into deflecting the cause for delays and slapdash application of licensing procedures on a lack of funds.

To be fair I think they may well have a valid point, FEO's are being cut back dramatically in some parts of Scotland, and this at a time when increased burdens on the licensing process are shortly due with air guns becoming part of it, but by releasing such statements to the press is pure scaremongering. I can only assume our shooting organisations weren't consulted prior to the statement as I haven't heard a word from them, but then again I don't read the papers.

I'm quite surprised police haven't yet again tried to link legitimate shooters with the risk of terrorism in a bid to strengthen their argument. Missed an opportunity there.

Unsubstantiated claims by shooters do us no favours either.

Charlie I think you are right on the money with your conspiracy theory!
