our 60 acre bean field was combined 5 weeks ago with beans laying every where we only got one shoot from it of 22 after 5 days it got ploughed after 3 weeks with beans still every where, my mate looked at it again on the off chance last thursday pm. and phoned me at work to say pigeons are all over it and it still coyered with beans and some are chitting and we should get a shoot off it friday. we turned up friday 9.30 am not a pigeon in sight went for a breakfast and came back at 11am. and there was just enough movement to convince us to set up. the wind was very awkward straight in our face. we decided to split up about 250 yds apart. i set up with 10 shells with socks over them and 6 fud with socks and 1turbo flapper. pigeons started coming from the off and it was soon 7 nill to them they kept 50 to 60 yds out and showed no sign of pitching in. after a long walk picking 3 up that had gone down in the hedge about 100 yds away i put those out and brought 3 decoys in. nearly all the birds were coming from behind over the high hedge not attempting to come in but actually spooking and flaring off with me having a shot up the back side at 60 to 70 yards. eventually some started to turn back mainly young birds and i shot some and added them to the pattern bringing more artificials in. my mate was doing worse i could see the birds going towards his decoys and turning away before they got in range, he ended up with 12 i ended up with 30 and all of them i left out as decoys but they still wouldnt come in, i am ashamed to say i had 80 shots. we went back saturday no pigeon came my mate went for a look sunday pigeon all over it decided to shoot monday not a bird to be seen. they are getting very fickle around here.
