AYA Cosmos

A friend is giving up his SGC and asked me round with ( I think ) the assumption I'd be interested in buying them off him.

One is a bolt-action W&S single barrelled 410, the other a AYA Cosmos 12 bore. Neither of them is my cup of tea really but both are quite interesting in an odd way, but the AYA is almost mint.

My question is, the AYA action is case hardened but looks as though it has been covered in either varnish or laquer. Does anyone know if this was in fact done to these guns when new? Ta.

Don't know about the Cosmos, but the action on my AYA Yeoman has a similar effect to the one you describe. Colour case hardening that appears to be under a layer of lacquer. I asked a gunsmith if a previous owner had tried to touch up or preserve the case hardening and his reply was something to the effect of "they're all like that. It's just how case hardening looks".

Case hardening should be lacquered to give it more durability and to give it a sheen as its natural finish is matt . When a gun is stripped cleaned and serviced it should be normal practice to re-lacquer all cased parts .

May guns do get a build up of "oils" on the action from over jealous stick treatments but it is a simple enough job to clean them up .
