Now i know this is going to be a heated discussion amongst some but here it goes.

First off i want to say i am someone who like to buy the best i can afford and believe in buy cheap, buy twice.

But here is my problem... I need a new scope to see me through to next year on my .30-06

money is a bit tight due to an upcoming week in the US and a month in OZ all before December..

so i need the best quality scope for not alot to go on my rifle that can take the concussion of the .30-06 and hold zero and preferably have exposed turrets.

I stuck an MTC on it due to the website saying.. it can go on a .50cal blah blah.. my rifle nocks it out of zero after each shot.. and you can track it moving an inch after each shot.

so looking to spend a couple of hundred on one to see me till january when i plan to get something like a Ziess etc.

so what have you used that you were surprised with the quality and performance for the £ that is suitable for centerfires

cheers

Thats good to know.. you can read what they say on the websites but at the end of the day there trying to sell it. hence why the MTC i got that apparently can go on a .50cal but didn't work out.

my .30-06 is a short barrel and when using it with out a mod there is a fair wolop from it on 180 grain

Why not just buy a decent scope and stop breaking them with the 'wolop', it makes no sense.

not sure you read my post all the way through. i need a scope to just last till next year. i already have a trip to the US next week and a month in OZ in november to pay for. just need a scope to down a few deer until next year.

then next year i will have the cash to get a Leica or Schmit etc. as my old scope was damaged on the glass and my current "get me out the **** " scope isn't up to par.

simple.

At a few hundred pounds, there's only ONE make I could recommend IF you can put up with the extra weight....a new Falcon M18. Turret repeatability is faultless, build is exceptional at the money and optics are easily on a par if not better than my Leupold scopes. Certainly, the Falcon exhibits far less chromatic aberration and produces a brighter sharper image, all signs of quality glass and superior quality lens coatings. Nick at Falcon is a pleasure to deal with as well. I would rate them the equal of a £1000 Vortex, and better than anything cheaper in the Vortex range. Trouble is, the M18 is NOT a good deer scope, it is more suited to target with its raised target turrets and bulky dimensions.

If just looking at a stand by, the optically, the newer Hawkes might have come on over the years but I wouldn't recommend one. I bought a new Hawke Endurance, one of the better ones, and when removing the top turret cap to "set zero", found to my horror that the factory has snipped a bit of tin of another turret inset dial to act as a shim and stuck it under the turret cap to stop it jamming because the erector tube assembly tolerance was 1mm out!

That is NOT a good advert for Hawke and because if it, I wouldn't buy another, ever. Their spotting scopes, are a different kettle of fish and are excellent, possibly the best for the money, but not their rifle scopes imho.

By way of contrast, I used a Nikko Stirling Gameking 3-9 x 40 on a rimfire for 4 years without any trouble at all. Budget, yes, but it proved reliable. For that reason, I'd probably recommend that if you must go budget, then don't spend too much, £50 buys a Gameking and it'll probably do the job ok for a few months plus you'll lose very little come sale time. Dont spend a few hundred on a budget scope as the build quality simply isn't there on any of them. The exception at £270 is M18, and Falcon are a UK company who use quality Japanese optics. It really is that good and as an engineer I don't understand how they've done it for the money. I'd be happy to use that for target competition on any rifle.

A good used European scope will see you right though and you may get something for £400 that will see you out without having to spend another penny on another hunting scope for deer.

chears pal.

I knew a few people would just go straight to don't buy a cheap one get a zeiss etc etc and not notice i have to fork out for US and OZ trips in the next month.

but thanks for the recommendation i will look into those scopes. it will just go on my .30-06 until Jan then i will stick it onto one of my rimfire etc. then get a proper one sorted.

Have a look at Emma Custom Rifles website mate. They have an excellent selection of "quality used optics" that may fall into your price range. The last time i looked they had some nice used Pecar's on there that would fall into you budget and waaaaaaaaaay better than any offering from Falcon, mtc or Hawke  . Some may be old but what the hell. They are quality scopes!!!

ATB,

Pat

If you're using this for stalking you could be wasting money 2 fold if it's paid stalking.

1 you could have difficulty seeing the deer through poor optics.

And 2 you're spending money on something not suitable.

I've been there before. You could go through an interest free credit option from uttings.
