malkiserow
I have the chance to make a little airgun range for all weather use in a 16 Meter long farm building. Not big I know but it would be for our family only and to help the kids build up their skills. What makes it better than a paper target stapled onto a plastic board ? The backstop is concrete blocks so a catcher is a must to avoid any bounce back. I guess good lighting but what else?
Stonepark
Couple of 10w or 20w flood led lights facing the target from about 10m (i.e. in front of shooting position), 2 magnetic resettable pellet catch traps with different sized disks rather than ducks or boar, magnetic biathlon target, normal 17cm heavy duty pellet trap for paper targets for zeroing would be good fun. chrisjpainter
change the heights, as well. then bring out the silly things - water balloons filled with paint, you can get exploding chalk targets, but they're easy to make too. bells behind targets. shaped targets are always fun. Sha Bu Le
All of the above + basically anything else that takes your fancy keeping safety in mind (at 16M No aerosols, they are fun at 25 metres + though). Bench rest - sturdy table. Spinners, could make your own
hambone
A cardboard box stuffed with old newspaper makes a cheap safe backstop
Salop Matt
Reactive targets for sure and there are so many to choose from !
Longstrider
At only 16 metres you can offer the shooters a real challenge. Drill small holes in a lump of wood and stick a few red matches in there, heads uppermost. No prizes for breaking the match or missing it completely. The challenge is to strike one alight It's not easy hitting them right, but it can be done ! As above, any reactive target keeps the interest levels up, with youngsters in particular. I once made a spinner type target that revolved on a length of studding (threaded rod). This allowed for a competition between 2 shooters. Hit the bottom of the 2 targets to make it spin and travel one way, hit the top to make it go the other way ... Winner is the one who jams it against the side of the frame it's in
manthing
Go to pound shop and get a load of trebor type mints, they go up well. Edited November 15, 2015 by manthing
eddoakley
Some old internal doors make good back stops at short range. If the pellet manages to penetrate both skins it certainly won't come back through off the concrete blocks. Used to have that in a garage as a kid with simple targets (anything we could pick up from cans and plastic bottles to cuddly toys ) hanging in front on a bit of string. Les*1066
Whatever you do, don't be tempted to shoot at golf balls on a string. They tend to come back at you twice as fast as they left you. Don't ask me how I know this.

10gaugewannabee
kids need movement to show they have hit it a small hole in a piece of card is boring what you need is the singing ringing spinning tree its a piece of threaded bar with bent tea and dinner spoons with a 5mm hole drilled in the end and the whole lot threaded with washers and plastic tube the frame that holds it is a couple of bits of manky angle iron with the bar threaded through it we also found that bulldog paper clips screwed to bricks and stuff good as we used to clip ballons into them we also used to use old toys , plates and stuff to break

1066
The local pound shop is your friend - loads of bags of small wooden beads, day-glow stickers, paper plates, packs of playing cards, water bomb balloons etc. etc.
GingerCat
Good lighting, a small heater, safe backstop and a kettle. The targets are the easy bit and worse case a packet of Trebor mints will liven things up. Maybe a radio and possibly some company.
Pistol p
Don't use straw bales as a backstop in an indoor range. Especially if you fancy a crack a exploding targets. Straw+sparks= fire. Just thinking safety.
