Alan Maughan Posted October 27, 2015 Report Share Posted October 27, 2015 (edited) I would like to put a set of off road/winter tyres on my Discovery 2 and wondered what you guys might recommend? Its my day to day transport for knocking around, some motorway driving but not much, mainly A & B rounds around the town and country. I do however go into the fields quite a bit, obviously I avoid it at really wet times bit I would like a tyre that would give me more confidence than the pure road tyres I currently use. I would say for the next 6 months I will use it 70/30 on/off road. I did wonder about going for pure 'off roaders' and just living with the disadvantages 'on road' but can't decide which way to go, I dont want to spend £500 to find I get stuck first time out using town/country brands that are more town than country if you know what I mean? Twistedsanity Posted October 27, 2015 Report Share Posted October 27, 2015 Winter off road tyres , lots of road noise and lower mpg plus the expense of buying them, not sure why you would bother with the on a road going 4x4 though? never used anything but road tyres on my shoguns and never got stuck. Vince Green Posted October 27, 2015 Report Share Posted October 27, 2015 (edited) Just talking about the snow contitions Can't speak about 4x4 winter tyres but my experience of winter tyres on a car in Germany was they were only marginally better than normal tyres not magical.The Germans favour chains over winter tyres. My solution for my van is a set of wheel chains which live under the passenger seat in the winter "just in case" Bought them from Lidl for £19.95 The Welsh valleys have some tough hills in snowy conditions. My son in Bristol also has a set which I bought at the same time. Bristol has some tough hills too. I think I had Goodyear wranglers on my navara, when we had all the snow a few years back, I never needed to put her into 4wd as the tyres gripped well enough on ungritted back roads. Mud and snow markings but not full winter tyre. My duster came with conti crosscontact which were ok in mud but geos are a step up without going full off road. I use them all the year round, no difference on my fuel consumption, no noise difference, Grabbers last about 110,000 miles, BFGs around 130,000 miles. Just changing a set of BFGs in my Defender at 130,000 miles, they still have maybe 10,000 miles in them but I two heavy weights and winter is coming. Cosd Posted November 5, 2015 Report Share Posted November 5, 2015 Can I ask if you've had your car over winter yet?had mine in snow on normal road tyres and there wasn't anywhere the car wouldn't go. I have since changed to AT2's when I needed some tyres for a little extra for when I go off road and so far very pleased with them. No change in MPG or road noise. My experience of winter tyres is really the opposite of yours, but it depends on the tyres that you buy. I have had both Goodyear and Continental winter tyres and there was a world of difference between those and regular tyres. Used to keep a spare set of wheels for mine and the wife's car as both were rear wheel drive. I have also had cheaper winter tyres that were still better than regular tyres, but not nearly as much difference.
