B391 Posted October 27, 2015 Report Share Posted October 27, 2015 Just a few things: If it is air suspension check for leaks in the rear air bags. Pull out red connector from ECU, under seat normally and check for oil passing through the loom which can cause mis-fires. If Yes the fix is about £50 for a new loom section which any competant DYI can fix. Look for loose steering box and any worn steering bushes Check for leaking swivels White or blue smoke from exhaust - poss turbo issues Check header coolant tank for oil Check chassis is solid Check for dashboard warning lights, you occasionally get a fault ABS sensor on the front which can throw up odd warnings Check all gears and low ratios Check service history Everything is fix-able. Yes certainly have 300 and td5 models.will never have another.Also had defenders and range rover.So I gave them a good go.a good friend bought a new short wheel Base a year ago against my advice less than two thousand miles had to have a new crossmember on the back and the little steps due to corrosion done under Warranty but the dealers managed to round off the bolts on the crossmember and left them on it.Very poor quality motors and even poorer aftercare. I never said rotted I said corrosion and as he quite rightly insisted that they were not just repainted they changed them.of course they argued but being in the legal profession they gave in.some people will just not accept poor quality as standard. Quite right.The original being not fit for purpose.The steps he told them to keep them.to be fair I have heard that the current discovery is quite good but I will not risk any of my cash to find out. viking Posted October 28, 2015 Report Share Posted October 28, 2015 id say body rot on the td5 isnt a problem really, on the 300tdi it is, most are rotten or been repaired, boot floors are known to go to, make sure the chassis is ok, make sure electrics all work,thats all i can offer really as thats what i was told when i bought my 300tdi, and my recent td5. i really like mine and to date no problems whatsoever, but iv only had it 6 months..dont be in a rush to buy one, plenty about, look about see whats worth what and work out what you should be getting for your money.if you can take a friend who know what hes doing, or i believe the AA offer a service where they will meet you at the car and look it over if you find the one you want lee Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It's been reliable, doesn't have any body rot, the chassis is solid, all the electrics work as they should, it doesn't use or leak oil and it's got perfectly adequate performance for the type of vehicle it is. If you are handy on the tools they are not expensive to maintain. As with any used vehicle make sure you do your homework first, take your time and buy carefully - there are a lot of rough ones about as is the case with ANY used vehicle. I looked at 8 or 9 before I bought mine. Take a look at the D2 Boys Club website: you'll get a much better idea of what's what with these vehicles and you won't get the "don't buy any LR product at any cost 'cus they're all poo" attitude. Considering the steps hang down and catch all the gravel, salt, stones etc I'll be very surprised if the new ones don't get rust spots, you would think a "legal" person would be able to work that out. Not just push it out to the customer and say well it is a landrover.your blind loyalty is admirable but the facts are that based on consumer study of all car brands land rover were found to be the worse with 71% of all there vehicles breaking down at least once a year.of course the Japanese take all the top ten places.I would be interested to hear why you believe that being in the legal profession would make you an expert on cars.Maybe better placed to know the laws on trading standards and consumer rights.Not many spend their free time under the bonnet. SirDread Posted October 29, 2015 Report Share Posted October 29, 2015 I am about to advertise my black 2002 landrover discovery for sale with less than 90k on it, 11 months MOT and had lots refreshed on it in the last 2.5 years I have owned it. They are great cars, go anywhere and the cheapest spares in abundance. Comfortable to drive with cruise control and for tall motors very firm in the corners. Arley Posted October 29, 2015 Report Share Posted October 29, 2015 Have had a number of 4x4 over the years, currently drive a Disco 3. My own experience was the TD5 was the best one I ever owned. Kept it for 9+ years and have regretted selling since I chopped it in for the Disco 3. The worst one I owned was a shogun.
