Xplor
Just a quick heads up guys. Keep you eyes on your osr. I have noticed a few building up on various fields Down the side of the M1 in Hertfordshire this week, so today I checked out a block I have in South Herts. I must have pushed 6/700 hundred off it with another 200 or so sat in the trees bordering. None of it was direct drilled so I am assuming they are hitting the crop. I will be out on it tomorrow so will keep you posted. Xplor.
aga man
We have pigeons feeding on rape here in parts of East Yorkshire, mainly due to little in the way of acorns and beechmast.[i reckon]. Hope you manage you shoot some before the gas guns come out! Keep us posted!
JDog
You differentiated between direct drilled and conventional drilling. Others who have seen them on direct drilled rape may be mistaken if they think that they are feeding on the rape rather than the left over barley. ShropshireSam
No sign of pigeons on rape yet in Shropshire. We have a really good acorn year here so seem to be mainly in/under the oaks at the moment. Most rape seems to be growing well in this mild weather which should concentrate the birds on to the odd thin patch in the corners etc. Hopefully that will help. matone
They`ve been eating the small plants on heavy patches of land for a couple of weeks with us,not in big numbers though, usually 15-30 ,enough to cause small scale damage though ! I have noticed a good few on Hawthorn and other berries. In previous years when we have had such a bumper crop of acorns they've stayed off the rape until well into the new year, so I will be interested to hear if decent bags are being shot..? The tendency is now for rape to be grown in ever larger blocks, which makes it even more difficult to decoy. Cat.
dad
about 1000 plus on some of our rape but switching between berries in a hawthorn spinney some maize cover crop and the rape all these are together in one block we can shoot the rape but have to keep well away from the spinney and maize because of the pheasants
Xplor
Just to update. I got out today, I was set up by about 09.30 just on the edge of a small copse with the wind at my back, 10 dead birds out on cradles and the magnet. Within minutes I had birds decoying in, steady I think sums up the day, I was packed up by 13.30 total count was 48. Pictures have been taken and Cosd my shooting buddy has kindly agreed to post for me. Xplor

Shotguneddy
Pretty tall here not far off a foot. It's going to be a difficult winter for the birds if it gets very cold everything's up to high and not many bold patches this year either

It's going to be a difficult winter for the birds if it gets very cold everything's up to high and not many bold patches this year either I would have thought quite the opposite. A tall crop will give plenty for the pigeons to eat, even with a good covering of snow.
Xplor
I was thinking the same, a good spell of frost will keep it down, I was speaking to my farmer yesterday and he said he won't expect it to grow much more this side of new year. kitchrat
I would have thought quite the opposite. A tall crop will give plenty for the pigeons to eat, even with a good covering of snow. What is snow?? I've forgotten. Seriously, the "Old Hands" at this game (I'm only 62 and been after them most of my life) always say that they don't like rape once it's tall, "'cos it's bitter". Wonder how they know? For sure they like it short (easier to land in??) but always seem to manage to feed along the wheel marks, especially where the tractor turns. These turning points are also in range of the hedge so COULD be a good factor for us?? We will see..

JDog
I prefer the original top picture of the sea food on the barbie. A good result for rape at this time of year when there are lots of other food sources available.
