Kennelling dog outside.

Finally persuaded the missus to getting a pup, So the puppy is coming home in January.

Trying to get everything organised.

The question I have is- at what age should you look at kennelling your pup outside?

Should it be toilet trained in the house first?

The intention is for the dog to sleep outside at nights, but it will be allowed in the house during the day when we are home.

Cheers,

John

Yes it will make life easier if the pup starts life inside the house , have a read up on crate training .

Bare in mind if its going outside during the winter it may need some heat and a well insulated sleeping box inside the kennel , it will also sooner or later try to eat the kennel so make sure its puppy proof !

Get it used to separation, I go kennel first then house, as the last thing you want is a dog that whines when separated from you. Keep it occupied just because you are at home does not mean it should be in 100% of the time, there may be times when it's not appropriate. Think ahead.

I am hoping for another pup in January myself.

Its home will be the kennel the house will be used for socialisation and house breaking

Dogs soon learn the kennel is thier place and want to go thier to sleep. Feed and chill

Don't feed it or let it sleep the night in the house imo

My older dogs have all run for the kennel if I say the word

my lab is kennelled outside most of the time and is quite content. I house trained him as a pup and he was staying out from about 4 months. He only ever comes into the utility/boot room and has never been inside the actual house- seems to know hes not allowed. Hes lying sleeping in utility just now-knackered after yesterdays shoot! But come Monday when we`r back at work he`ll be back in his kennel for the week. I used to leave a radio on in the kennel when he was young and seemed to stop him chewing things.

Only going on my own experience but Id crate train 1st then start to kennel over night.
