pinks and pigeons

We have just driven through Burnham Market on our way to Holkham.

Just outside Burnham there was a field of harvested sugar beet. On one half of the field were 300 pigeons and many joining, on the other half of the field were 400 pinks.

Under strong instructions I have left my gun at home.

I saw a very similar thing recently, less than a mile from the marsh I frequent. This particular field held a few more pinks and a few less pigeons, though.

Well I have been trying to hit on a pigeon infested field since August to no avail. Today and two days last week on the Estate where I was beating it would have been possible to have had a lot of shooting with birds zipping over dry stone walls like driven grouse, in fact the pigeon seemed to be on the wing all day. Today they were landing on a barley stubble which they shared with numerous crows, five swans and a number of pinks which continued to drop in even after a pheasant drive in the vicinity.
