Royboy Posted November 25, 2015 Report Share Posted November 25, 2015 My dog had stiches about a month ago because of a very deep cut on his chest from a barbed wire fence, the wound looks great but the hair that got shaved hasn't grown back yet, when do you think I can take him beating again ? old'un Posted November 25, 2015 Report Share Posted November 25, 2015 if the wound is completely healed so no infection can get in you should be good to go, might get a few more scratches on bare skin if you work him in heavy cover so just keep an eye on him. Mine had a grass seed stuck between the toes, it had come out the Vet said, it hadn`t, 3 years later a lump like you have described. it had traveled about 5" , when they cut into the leg, it was all swollen badly, was going to send it for biopsy, turned out it was the grass seed, it had gone bad ways.. He cut into the lump, and did not send it away as it was obvious what it was.. never say it has ALL been taken away, it only takes a little to cause infection.. I went to another Vet who sorted it.. malmick Posted November 25, 2015 Report Share Posted November 25, 2015 A guy on our shoot had to eventually have a young springer put down due to a grass seed that had impacted in the dog's skin and then migrated causing what the vet first thought was a tumour. These grass seeds sound awful I would not worry to much about grass seeds in your case, grass seeds need something to attach to, fur! Just Google something like 'grass seeds and dogs' this will give you some idea of the problems grass seeds can cause and what to look for, unfortunately the very nature of our sport makes us and our dogs open to all sorts of injuries. al4x Posted November 26, 2015 Report Share Posted November 26, 2015 The hair gives an element of protection so I'd let it regrow a bit before starting, glad yours is doing well my girls injury is being a nightmare, stitched up. Then went septic and swelled up so operated again and drain in more antibiotics. 2 weeks on she has the drain out but still has a drain hole left to drain the fluid and still on anti biotics and slowly improving. How is yours getting on? I've had to change vets and have her operated on, the wound looks horrendous and is nearly a foot long! But they found a lump of branch that was never going to clear up if left in there. 3 weeks of going septic and draining meant he had to remove a lot of skin as well. I said to the vet that I was sure there was still fluid in there. No, she said, it's just inflammation I can feel. Next thing I put the dog down on the floor and lo and behold fluid suddenly started gushing out. Was not impressed and losing faith fast in our vets. So back in again for another drain. She is currently in her crate looking distinctly sorry for herself. Glad they got to the bottom of it with yours, what a relief! al4x Posted December 4, 2015 Report Share Posted December 4, 2015 This is my issue with the vets, very young vets who just go by the book and can't seem to take a proper course of action. My dad was a vet for 40 years though not practicing now and on his advice letting them leave her on antibiotics for 3 weeks with no proposed action was just going to get us nowhere. Fortunately we found another vet who has gundogs and knew he had to go in and find what it was. spinach Posted December 5, 2015 Report Share Posted December 5, 2015 We bought a dog who had suspected folliculitis as she kept getting lumps coming up on her thigh, treated with antibiotics and asked to shampoo with medicated stuff. They kept coming back , a change of vets instantly brought a plan, shave treat aggressively with antibiotics hard and fast, if still problem biopsy and skin test, noted my "she's quite itchy "comment and looked in her ears , ear mites! Got treatment and hibiscrub wash. She's now a much happier dog. Sometimes changing vets is good as they can see your not best pleased and forces their hand into stepping up and communicating a plan.
