Pigeon migration (2............ or 3).

This week I am in the Cotswolds satisfying old clients. Well some may not be satisfied but they are all old.

Taking a breather I looked over the farm land running away from the house only to spot a continuous line of little specks in the sky being buffeted by the wind. At first I thought they were Fieldfares or Redwings as there are a lot in the area devouring hawthorn berries. The straggly line was blown towards me and I then made out that they were pigeons. It is difficult to guess numbers when this sort of thing is seen but I estimate that there were something in excess of 3,000 pigeons. They were intent on flying into the distance and were not drawn in by the movement of the local pigeons feeding on the maize game strip that has gone down due to the wind and the rain.

My long distance eyesight is very good but even so I could not make out whether they were Scandinavian imports or not.

Last week end during the heavy rain and wind we saw a good flightline travelling down a river valley south and presumed it was a migration flock on the move. We have in the past managed to decoy these seasonal flocks but this year the pattern has been spasmodic and we have managed to pick up on resting flocks in the woods refuelling on acorns etc.We also benefit from harsh weather up north as this tends to send us flocks of birds South.
