NorfolkAYA
Hi all, I'm looking at getting a break barrell air rifle for the odd rating and rabbit session. I have never had an air rifle before always had shotguns. What's the best version, PCP or spring And what's the best calibre? Any recommendations for a starter rifle would be much appreciated Cheers pete

secretagentmole
Right oh boy! Now you want to get yourself over to Mr Webster at Wymondham, he has a few air rifles in stock and has an account at Edgar Brothers, so can order you in a 900 if he does not have one in stock. The 900 is an ok gun, it has a trigger that is best described as woolly. It is however accurate and quite capable of being used for vermin shooting, A much better gun and one he does keep in stock is the venerable Hatsan 55 (.177) or 60 (.22), a much better trigger and also sold as a Webley Stingray Mk 2 at double the cost! Both should be under £100..... Should you not be borassic like most of us, he also sells the HW95, which is like the Roills Royce of Spring powereds, these babies, once fettled, and they usually need it, are like the Rolls Royce or Brough Superior of airguns. The Rekord trigger is brilliant, once all the rough edges, bad spring, nicked seals etc have been sorted they are the best break barrel on the market. He should have one in stock for under £300.... PCP rifles are a whole different ballgame as you will need a pump or air cylinder, as well as the gun, unless you want to go back to the shop every time you go shooting to charge the rifle up.... manthing
Get yourself a nice 2nd hand hw77, hw97 or tx200 these are the bogs dollocks when it come to spring powered air guns. If you're used to a shotty the weight shouldn't be a problem. As it's only for occasional use forget a tcp as it will at some point leak (as we are generalizing). Personally I only shoot .22 now, as in the past I've had .177 go through pray allowing it to escape to a lingering death. Learn your hold under and over, get a simple 6x40 or 6x44 scope and get you range estimating bob on. Other than that it's the fun of practice practice practice. Reactive targets(spinners, re-setable) are much more fun, I only shoot targets if I change sumat, not very often. In my humble opinion, its better to buy a used quality gun than a cheap new gun, quality will all ways be worth more should you ever decide to sell on. Please feel free to disagree, but your wrong. oowee
i like this. The best is the one that you can afford for sale in a place that you can collect for the use you want to put it to. I have a Daystate huntsman 177 sub 12 its beautiful but expensive. Till i bought a air ranger half the price in .22 which is easier to shoot (flatter) and has a higher shot count. Its what you can get a the time that you can afford. I think pretty much anything reasonably modern is going to be on the ball just depends on budget and availability. The HW is better, but not so much better it justifies the price increase in my mind!

14Supersport04
Get a BSA supersport in .22 i have one i and have killed lots of squirrels and pigeons with it. I can shoot it accuratly at 30 yards with a scope on but i prefer the open sights if comes with as it is more of a challenge to get close to your quarry. the enigma
Hw77. I've recently got a secondhand one that's about 30 years old that I paid under £150 for. The internals are totally original, but it's the sweetest spring air rifle I've ever shot, the trigger is absolutely fantastic.

That is the problem, those guns ARE superb, the ones they make now need work to get them to the level of quality that yours was made to! manthing
Peeps I said get a 2nd hand one as prices are reasonably constant. And it will be a better rifle.

secretagentmole
I picked one up just before xmas, second hand for 150 quid,it has had a v mach kit fitted,in mint condition and shoots like a dream, you wont go far wrong You got a good one then, one where the work has been done. We Vortexed our last HW95, before it was tuned it buzzed, had poor spring finishing which was gouging the mechanism, grease full of swarf, could shave with some parts of it, generally an average HW of the modern age! After tuning, recoil lowered, no buzzing or twanging and the bad spring was consigned to the bin!
evo
if I could only have one spring gun for vermin and pest control it would be without a doubt a HW80, pure killing machine and also in the right hands super accurate
