Well 3rd trip up to the solway & still not managed a shot at a pink :unhappy: . A lot of birds about but most going off along the sand & across WWT land & the few skiens that did come over us where 150yrds plus up but there was still bell ringers taking shots at them. Someone on the English side was getting a few shots off with What sounded like an 8bore most mornings so most of been a few over that side coming down. Up again in Feb for the end of the season so would be nice to get my first pink (well it could happen  ). How's everybody else doing?

I am having a season well beyond my expectations to be fair , though my last three flights have all been blanks.

If you don't get your pink on the Solway in Feb then I would be happy to take you out on the wash to try for one next season if you fancy a trip over here.

I went to the solway last week, far to many folk chasing very few geese, managed to get out the way and have a go at some small groups with success.

Alot of geese are staying inland, what with the heavy winds on the shore, they is that much water and green grass inland about up that way they are filling their boots.

As far as geese go , average to above average with most people who know what there doing getting there fair share , we have still got a lot of geese that are now started to feed on the grazing marshes , as most of the grass never really died off this year due to the very mild weather we have had up to now .

As for duck , below to well below average , with large amounts of water on most fields that are used by duck, if and when they move about that is , blanks are the norm at the moment with the odd Widgeon finding its way in the bag as a moral boaster .

That's a very kind offer Fenboy which i may well take you up on. As is nearly always the way in Scotland the best weather was on Sunday Fog in the morning then was blowing hard Sunday night thought to myself should be a good morning flight & come the morning clear sky & no wind. Had a drive about to see were the pinks where feeding & found a splash that must of had 300 plus widgeon & teal on it but someone already has it so a no go. Only shooting we had was on the crows & a few pigeon, but was just nice to be up there. And yes lots of very big splashes on a lot of fields so no need for the pinks to return to the roost.

I should not be too worried about not bagging a goose in only your 3rd trip. One season on the Wash back in the 80s I did not bag my first pink of the season until about 7am on Feb 20th. Thats cutting it a bit fine though. Had about 20 flights before that season all blanks.

Its my first season wild fowling on the Norfolk marshes, thanks to some very helpful members , Marsh man being one, I have had a very good season so far with 11 pinks ,3 mallard and 3 teal, usually a pigeon shooter I didnt expect to get under the geese but things have gone very well, more luck than judgement, I have found best results are with decoys during the daytime but also one or two fell as they flighted back to roosts at last light,

The height they fly at took me a bit by surprise, I expected many more low birds but in truth they prefer many hundreds of feet when moving from one feeding ground to another or going back to roost,

Really foul weather helps keep them down , wind and rain, but sadly I also hate those conditions and prefer to stay warm and dry. Many times I have sat staring at an empty sky and wondered what I was doing there, but even with all the blank sessions its still a real buzz when you hear them coming and you know your in with a chance.,

Our local farmer keeps calling for guns to move them off his crops, but every time I turn up at the designated land there is not a goose in sight, unlike pigeons where there are a few almost every where, the geese concentrate into large skeins , so if you are not where they are you are going to have a very quiet and frustrating time.

My nearest and favourite marsh is just 10 minutes away, so no travelling and I can get out several time a week (weather permitting)

I am looking out the window as I write this, the sun is shining and there is a good breeze, so Im off to the marsh now to catch them as they head off to roost, lets hope my luck continues.:lol:
