How much buffer?

I bought some Bismuth shot years ago, but have never reloaded any yet. Up till now, I have been using 42g Gamebore Mammoth(steel) in the 10-bore with gauge-mates. How much buffer is it appropriate to use with 42g of Bismuth 4 shot with fibre wads in a 10-bore? I need to order some.

You load buffer into the shot charge mixing it into the shot as you go, tapping the case and you will see the buffer work up to the surface of the Charge then you are ready to crimp.

I would guess around 19 grains will be about what you will need for that load thats with the winchester type buffer i use, other types may vary a little but you will be close enough at 19grain

Use undershot card to help prevent migration of the buffer into the powder charge and any shot embeding issues that may or may not be a problem dependant on type of fibre wad case and wad size etc. It can be helpfull if using the finner buffers like the winchester to incorporate a thin maylar disk on top of the shot charge before the crimp this will stop buffer being lost through the crimp area and the loosening of the load . Not a problem on all cases but it is on some.. Once fired winchesters for example here.

Cheers! That gives me an idea how much I need to order.

I don't understand. Surely the amount and type of buffer you require depends on a few other unknown factors. Powder type and charge etc will have a bearing. Obviously you have no recipes. I imagine you are making a load up, with a view to sending to the proof house.

As I said previously, though, I would have thought a bigger shot charge would make better use of a 10.
