Where did they all come from ?

Over the last week wildfowl numbers have been building up to numbers we don't normally see on our part of the coast.

Speaking to the local birdwatcher who do the bird counts he recons a few days ago there were in the region of 26,000 Widgeon plus some Mallard , Teal , and a few Pintail , today there might be more than that .

This morning around 7 30 the tide was leaving the flats and there were vast numbers on the move and yet the last two nights I have been out with the gun I have seen next to nothing , apart from one Mallard I got two nights ago.

So where have they all come from ?

The weather has been very cold across the North Sea so I expect a lot of duck will have been frozen out of the Baltic ( it was -10 there at midday a few days ago). Plus of course its been cold in Northern UK. Perhaps I was a little too early with my N Norfolk coastal flight the other day.
