Due to my love of Moon Flighting Geese i arrived sunday 7pm in a Car less Carpark as I've done for my last seven flights. Over the years I've noted the Geese at this time seem to drop into places they haunted in good numbers early on in the season for 1-3 days as they make there way North.

Letting the Dog's out I was pleasantly surprised to hear A Pink well I had one to try for half an hour three times i heard just a single Pink feeling the cold I decided to have a walk arriving at a spot i had done well in the past i settled in a creek total silence apart from the dropping tide i was thinking maybe the Pink had been a lost or pricked bird when without warning a small chuntering party passed to my left whilst thinking if only calling Pink's could be heard heading my way my heart sank as there to passed left just out of range.

Fighting temptation to move as again it was silent for a good while I hear a single Pink to my right closer and closer gripping my gun in anticipation i finally caught sight of my Goose with four mate's. In spite of having been in this situation many times the heart rate was doing overtime my head was willing the five to keep coming as good as gold they done as wished relief joy and excitement all rolled into one came as my first then second shot folded a Pink .

Having managed to stop one dog from taking a Goose from the other i stood bathed in Moon light as both Dog's brought a Pink to hand i thought we will continue this battle all being well October.

Seeing the weather forecast last night offered my last Inland Moon flight chance so having phoned all estates i shoot none had any Goose problems only one had Geese passing over so with a good wind knowledge of flight lines i set out for my last Inland flight of the present season.

Within minutes of parking i heard a Goose heading !!!! A couple of move's later i stood with gun and Dog's in a Moon lit starry sky not good also what few Geese had flighted had been one side then the other walking back to my truck to have a look elsewhere i stopped as I heard Pink's straining my eyes to find them in the Ink Black sky i spotted them slightly right handed but up a bit knowing this could be my last shot at a Pink this season I waited till they was about to cross the Moon firing at the lead bird apart from what sounded like a good hit i honestly did not know my shot was good until i heard a solid thump on the ground Job done both Foreshore and Inland I had killed Pink's on my last flight.

Out of habit i made my last stop where Geese had feed in previous weeks over my boundary. Hearing a few Geese down feeding but nothing flighting i sat listening for a hour when a single Pink came calling dropping bang online with a now perfect sky my single shot folded the Goose all Hell broke loose Geese jumped and went everywhere twice i had very easy chances but missed handsomely both barrels .

Now i had a wait on as know way was i going to end the season on a double miss for over a very cold hour i sat nothing when finally odd Geese then Skeins started to flight back. Having a strong word with myself i got ready as a Skien appeared which i could see from a long way off get closer and closer know mistake this time as two thumps followed my shot's quickly reloading whilst my Dog's retrieved the Geese seven Pink's on set wing's appeared in front again two shot's two thumps leaving the gun empty as my season on Pink's was definitely know over i took three Pink's from my Dog's strange one Goose missing also my young Lab looking around i saw him standing in the field calling him back i could see he was struggling and kept stopping just as i was about to walk to see what was wrong he came trotting back and i saw he had a very large Greylag result what a way to end my Pink season.

4am we arrived home cold tired sad my season was over but a helluva way to end it. Now Bambie can cop it whilst i wait the long months for the Pink's to take up battle once again

Sounds like a great end to a good season - judging by your previous posts. Just shows there is nothing to beat knowledge and experience. We shoot the moon up here for wigeon/pinks and will just manage to get on the February moon for the last few days of the season - there is nothing quite like it when it goes to plan... which is far from guaranteed

Enjoy the summer, it'll be October before you know it.

Than you.

In years past I've been very very lucky to have shot Pink's/Whitefronts under October -November -December -January and February Moon on the Foreshore

Will you not shoot the February moon, our rule is four days before, the night of the full moon and two days after, or is it that most of your geese will have left by then,

Regards

I would expect the vast majority of the geese to have gone and I am also working :unhappy:

Unfortunately where i shoot these days the Pink's are long gone by February.

In the past Yes I've had great success February Moon Flighting.

I myself start going under the Moon ( weather permitting ) like you four days before and up to five days after the Full Moon but the fourth and fifth night's the cloud cover has to be Spot on.

Many years past ( all legal and above board ) i had some Exceptional Moon Flighting on Island of Islay shooting Greenland Whitefront and Barnacle Geese in places you would not believe Geese would feed or roost.

An excellent way to finish the inland shooting season Boyd , you certainly put in the time and you well deserve the success you get .

With the car park being empty each time you have been lately make you wonder if shooting under the moon is becoming a thing of the past , or will be once the dedicated few like yourself hang there guns up . Good luck if you carry on coastal for the next three weeks .

Thanks John

Just my honest opinion but when the Geese start moving about eg here today gone tomorrow and in hundreds instead of thousands the lazy Goose Shooters disappear as it's too much hard work and effort to get a shot.

I see the same early season only the odd Wildfowlers chasing early Pink's soon as big numbers turn up so does the Goose Shooters.

Even my last 6 morning flights I've been Billy no mate's yet it shot Pink's on 5 flights
