JDog Posted January 28, 2016 Report Share Posted January 28, 2016 For the last three years or so I have gleaned considerable knowledge from the experts on this forum about decoying on winter OSR. Granted some of these 'experts' may not have a gun or may have never even been in a field. It takes all sorts. In an idle moment this morning waiting for the washing machine to finish and the utility room floor to dry I have pondered the secret of successful decoying over this particular crop and the solution came to me in a flash. All the decoyer needs to know is either which fields the pigeons will return to readily without too much of a delay or which fields the pigeons are heading to for a voracious feed. Simples. sako751sg Posted January 28, 2016 Report Share Posted January 28, 2016 Winter shooting of pigeons can be the most frustrating disciplines imo and we seem to be baffled year in year out even though we have seen it all before. Their numbers can be huge but try and suss them out and more times than not we lose but its great to see PC consistently achieving good bags and he sure knows his stuff compared to me. Ive had some good bags on OSR in the snow which were short but sweet but most winter shooting ive had to adapt to either setting up at sitty trees or on a flightline when there has been a good wind. pigeon controller Posted January 28, 2016 Report Share Posted January 28, 2016 We have talked in the past of flightlines, that is a major part of achieving a bag. The city provides warm roosts in unusual areas, golf courses, cemeteries and Victorian parks and houses. You will know from my posts that we travel to find the birds but we are mindful of flightlines from roost woods and the like. Over twenty five years we have built a memory bank of areas to shoot at different times of the year. I never stop watching pigeons and you get a feel for the reaction to you walking them off a field and whether thay will return . The big concern is them returning in large numbers which is a problem in it self as you shoot two and spook fifty. I've said before that we try to shoot the tail end Charlie's so you only spook the back end. We all want them to return individually every thirty seconds or so for four or five hours but that will not happen. Last week we had to move three times to get a bag and that seems the current method with the flocks available , last year at this time we were having ton bags each day over the weekend.
